Chapter 3 - The Midnight Panic

Adrian stood on the snowy sidewalk, furiously dialing my personal phone, only to hear the automated operator declare that his number had been restricted. Shivering in his wool coat, he had no choice but to load his heavy luggage into the back of his town car and drive toward the downtown boutique hotel near Michigan Avenue.
When he arrived at the hotel reception to check into the executive penthouse suite, the front desk clerk handed his black corporate credit card back with a courteous, embarrassed smile.
"I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Sterling. The card was declined by your issuer."
"Declined?" Adrian scoffed, laughing in disbelief. "Try it again. That card has an unlimited corporate expense threshold approved by Whitmore Sterling Group."
The clerk tapped his terminal again. "I apologize, sir. The notification says 'Card Suspended by Account Administrator - Board Audit Hold.' Do you have an alternative personal card?"
Sweat broke out on Adrian’s forehead despite the cold draft from the revolving doors. He reached for his personal credit card—the one he rarely used because he charged virtually every lavish dinner, hotel stay, and flight to company entertainment accounts.
The personal card cleared, but the incident planted a cold, gnawing thorn of anxiety in his chest. He rushed up to the junior suite, threw his coat on the bed, and dialed Madison’s room at Northwestern Memorial.
"Adrian, where have you been?" Madison’s voice came through the line, sounding exhausted and agitated. "The private pediatric nurse you promised hasn't arrived, and the billing department just came in saying the private room supplement wasn't authorized on the corporate health plan."
"What do you mean it wasn't authorized?!" Adrian yelled, pacing the carpeted floor.
"They said executive corporate perks for maternity suites require a signed disclosure form from the board chairwoman!" Madison panicked, her sweet, triumphant persona evaporating completely. "Adrian, you told me Claire was just a harmless socialite! You said she gave you full control of the board!"
"She did!" Adrian shouted back, running both hands through his hair. "She handed over her proxy five years ago! She never attends meetings! She spends her time visiting children's hospitals and art galleries! She doesn't have the courage to touch the corporate structure!"
"Then why are my credit lines frozen?!" Madison cried, her voice cracking over the crying sounds of baby Eli. "If she takes this to the board, Adrian, my career is finished! I'm the VP of regional operations—sleeping with the married CEO violates our executive ethics clause!"

"Nobody is taking down anyone," Adrian hissed through clenched teeth, though his own voice wavered. "Claire is bluffing. She's eight months pregnant, hormonal, and terrified of raising a child alone. Tomorrow morning, I will walk into that boardroom, reassert my authority, and remind her where her money actually comes from."
He slammed the phone down, poured himself a tumbler of cheap hotel scotch, and spent the entire night rehearsing speeches about corporate stability, masculine leadership, and the necessity of keeping private marital affairs separate from commercial interests.
