Chapter 3 - The Ghost Clinic

For the next four days, I was confined to strict bed rest under an alias at Massachusetts General Hospital. Rachel had arranged for my chart to be placed under highest medical confidentiality, using her connections as a senior corporate litigator to ensure that Peter could not locate my room or obtain my medical updates.
Every time I looked down at my rounded stomach, a profound, disorienting wave of sorrow washed over me. I felt the sharp, distinct kicks of three separate lives growing inside me. For six months, I had sung lullabies to them, believing they shared my blood, my eyes, and my late mother's gentle smile. Now, knowing they were the genetic offspring of strangers—commodities pre-sold to the highest bidder—felt like an agonizing betrayal of my own maternal instinct. Yet, whenever their tiny limbs fluttered against my ribs, an overwhelming surge of love defied all logic. They were innocent. They knew only the warmth of my body, the sound of my heartbeat, and the rhythm of my breathing.
On the fifth morning, Rachel arrived with a battered leather briefcase and two large cups of black coffee. Her hair was pulled into a severe bun, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes. She pulled up a chair, pulled out a thick stack of manila folders, and laid them across my bed.
""I called in every favor I had in Boston, Chicago, and New York,"" Rachel said, her voice gravelly from exhaustion. ""I started by pulling your old records from 2021. You remember the boutique wellness clinic you visited in Chicago right after our mother passed away? The one that offered comprehensive genetic screening and wellness mapping?""
I frowned, straining my memory through the fog of grief. ""The Apex Longevity Center? I went there for general blood panels because I was feeling chronically fatigued after Mom's funeral. They took blood, saliva, and had me sign several intake packets on electronic tablets.""
Rachel nodded grimly. ""Exactly. Apex Longevity went bankrupt eight months later. Its medical data assets and biological sample repositories were bought out at a closed bankruptcy auction by a shell corporation named 'Vanguard Biometrics'. And do you know who served on the advisory board of Vanguard Biometrics?""
""Peter,"" I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.
""Not just Peter,"" Rachel corrected, sliding a corporate registry document across my blanket. ""Peter and his late partner, Arthur Sterling. That electronic signature you saw on the surrogacy document was lifted directly from your digital intake forms at Apex Longevity from September 2021. They harvested your biometric signature, your full medical history, and your genetic profile. Peter didn't meet you by chance at that coffee shop in Chicago in 2022, Nora. He hunted you.""
My breath caught in my throat. I remembered that rainy Tuesday so vividly: dropping my umbrella, a handsome man in an expensive wool coat picking it up, offering to buy me a pastry, listening to me talk about my loneliness and my dream of someday raising a large, happy family. It had all been staged. Every conversation, every compliment, every romantic gesture had been part of a cold, predatory operation.
""He targeted you because you had pristine health, no genetic abnormalities, and most importantly, you were emotionally vulnerable and possessed zero living parents to ask probing questions,"" Rachel continued, her voice trembling with indignation. ""He married you to gain absolute legal and physical control over your reproductive choices.""
""And the clinic here in Boston?"" I asked, my voice shaking. ""Dr. Marcus at the Beacon Fertility Institute? He’s the one who performed the embryo transfer! He smiled at me, Rachel! He held my hand during the procedure and said our embryos looked beautiful!""
Rachel pulled out a printed investigative report and tapped the photo of Dr. Marcus. ""Beacon Fertility is a sham facade. It's an unlicensed boutique lab operating under the umbrella of international medical tourism. Marcus was stripped of his medical license in California eight years ago for illegal egg harvesting. Peter bankrolled his underground setup in Boston to service ultra-wealthy clients who want children completely off the legal books.""
""So the babies..."" I looked down, my hands instinctively cradling my belly. ""They really belong to those three families?""
May you like
Rachel hesitated, a strange, unreadable expression passing over her features. She pulled out a final, thin folder that sat at the very bottom of her stack.
""That’s where this story gets even darker, Nora,"" Rachel said quietly. ""I managed to obtain the internal transport manifests from the lab where the embryos were kept before the transfer. Peter lied to everyone. Not just to you. He lied to the buyers.""
