Chapter 2 - The Stolen Signature

The sterile room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence. The only sound was the harsh rattle of paper as Rachel snatched the contract from my frozen hands. She skimmed the paragraphs rapidly, her legal training taking over as she digested the horrifying clauses.

""This is completely fraudulent,"" Rachel said, her voice dropping into a deadly, composed register. ""Nora was living in Chicago in September 2021. She had never set foot in Boston, she didn't know you existed, and she certainly didn't sign a surrogacy contract for an elite private clinic in downtown Manhattan.""

Peter sneered, tucking his hands into his pockets with arrogant ease. ""A forensic handwriting expert will confirm that is her authentic signature. You think I didn't plan for complications? The legal system cares about signatures on paper, Rachel, not emotional sob stories. That contract binds her to deliver those infants to the designated legal representatives immediately following birth. If she attempts to flee, conceal the children, or breach the terms, she will be sued into absolute oblivion for breach of contract, fraud, and millions in damages. The families involved have more money than you can comprehend. They own judges.""

""Who are they, Peter?"" I choked out, clutching the hospital gown over my chest. ""Whose babies are kicking inside me right now? Tell me!""

Peter looked down at me, his eyes entirely devoid of warmth. ""It doesn't concern you. All you need to know is that one belongs to a tech magnate's daughter who didn't want pregnancy to ruin her career, one belongs to an overseas diplomat who needed an heir without public scrutiny, and the third belongs to the family of my late business partner, Arthur Sterling. Arthur's widow wanted his frozen genetic line preserved. I arranged it all. I secured the top fertility doctors, bypassed the lengthy regulatory boards, and provided a healthy, compliant carrier. We stand to walk away with seven million dollars once the handoffs are complete.""

""We?"" I whispered, disgust rising like bile in my throat. ""You used my body like a rented machine! You held my hand while I cried over hormone injections! You kissed my forehead when the implantation worked!""

""And you got the pregnancy you desperately whined for, didn't you?"" Peter snapped, his mask slipping entirely to reveal raw cruelty. ""You wanted to be a mother so badly you were practically pathetic. You swallowed every pill I gave you, signed every consent form I placed under your nose without reading past the first page, and let me manage all the doctor visits. You were the perfect vessel. Soft, trusting, and utterly blind.""

Before I could scream, Rachel lunged forward and slammed the emergency call button on the wall console. A high-pitched chime echoed down the hallway.

""Security to room 412,"" Rachel announced into the intercom speaker. ""We have an unauthorized individual harassing an inpatient at risk of premature labor.""

Peter’s jaw tightened. He glared at Rachel, then down at me, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. ""Play your games, Nora. Call your security guards. Cry to your sister. But remember this: you cannot run from a contract you signed. In three months, those babies come out of you, and they go directly to their rightful owners. If you fight me on this, I will have you declared mentally unfit, take sole custody of whatever legal rights you claim to have, and put you in a state ward until the delivery. Don't test me.""

He snatched the leather folder back from the bed, spun on his heel, and strouted toward the door. Two burly hospital security officers appeared in the doorway, blocking his path. Peter adjusted his cuffs, flashed them a calm, disarming smile, and said, ""I was just leaving, gentlemen. My wife is simply overtired.""

He slipped past them into the crowded corridor, disappearing into the maze of the hospital.

The moment he was gone, the monitors began chiming with alarm. The contractions were hitting again, harder and faster. The lead obstetrician, Dr. Katherine Hayes, rushed into the room, flanked by two nurses.

""Her blood pressure is through the roof,"" Dr. Hayes said, checking the monitors with sharp efficiency. ""Nora, look at me. Breathe. Slowly, in and out. We need to administer magnesium to halt these contractions. The babies cannot come today. They are only twenty-six weeks.""

As the cold medication rushed into my veins, Rachel leaned over me, tears silently wetting my forehead. ""I'm going to destroy him, Nora,"" she whispered fiercely. ""I don't care how many millions he has behind him. He took your body, your trust, and your soul. He will pay for every single tear.""
