Chapter 8 - The Clean Sweep

The following forty-eight hours moved with the ruthless efficiency of a military counter-offensive. With my father orchestrating logistics and my corporate legal counsel handling the paperwork, the purge was absolute.

First came Evelyn.

My mother-in-law had spent decades lording her supposed social pedigree over my family, boasting about her lineage and her spotless social standing in the country club circuit. But child endangerment charges do not care about social standing. The Dublin police arrested Evelyn at her private condo on Wednesday afternoon, charging her as an accessory to felony child endangerment and obstruction of justice.

When the local news cameras caught her being led out of her gated community in handcuffs with her hair unstyled and her designer sunglasses crooked, she tried to cover her face with an expensive cashmere scarf. The judge, having reviewed the hospital reports detailing Sadie’s frostbite, set her bail at a punishing five hundred thousand dollars cash. None of her wealthy country club acquaintances stepped forward to post it.

Next came Vanessa Sterling.

Federal agents intercepted her at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York as she attempted to board a flight to Geneva with two carry-on bags stuffed with fifty thousand dollars in laundered cash, expensive jewelry purchased on Trevor's corporate cards, and a forged second passport. Facing twenty years for conspiracy to commit federal wire fraud and interstate transport of stolen property, Vanessa flipped within three hours of interrogation, handing over every single text, audio recording, and spreadsheet Trevor had ever sent her.

By Thursday morning, a federal grand jury had returned a sixteen-count indictment against Trevor, including charges under the RICO statute for organized interstate fraud.

With Special Agent Miller’s team working alongside our forensic accountants, we executed emergency legal freezes across all offshore accounts. Because Trevor had used domestic internet connections and attempted to route funds through federally insured institutions, the IRS was able to seize ninety-four percent of the stolen assets before they could be dispersed into anonymous cryptocurrency wallets. Every penny of Sadie’s college fund was restored, and my stolen corporate stock options were frozen pending immediate court-ordered repatriation.

On Friday afternoon, I stood in the middle of our Dublin home. The splintered front door had already been replaced with a reinforced, solid steel-core oak door installed by my father’s veteran carpentry crew.

A large commercial dumpster sat parked in our driveway. With the help of my father and three of his former platoon members, we stripped Trevor’s existence out of that house room by room. His expensive suits, his golf clubs, his Italian leather luggage, and his smug family portraits were hauled out to the curb and tossed into the trash without a shred of sentimentality.

""How are we looking on the perimeter, Colonel?"" I asked, wiping sawdust from my hands as Dad walked in carrying a toolbox.

""All locks re-keyed. Motion-activated floodlights installed on all four corners. New smart security hubs wired with private redundant satellite backup that nobody can tamper with,"" Dad reported with a proud, tight smile. He set his heavy wrench down and looked at me. ""The garbage has been taken out, Valerie. Now it’s time to bring our girl home.""
