Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

When my flight touched down at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the gray Ohio winter sky hung low and heavy. I didn't stop for luggage. I took a cab straight to the Dublin Police Department headquarters, where my father was waiting for me in the main briefing room.
Arthur Vance looked every bit the retired general. Dressed in a dark wool overcoat, his jaw freshly shaved and his silver hair cropped tight, he stood with his hands clasped behind his back, reviewing paperwork with two plainclothes federal agents.
""Valerie,"" he said, opening his arms.
I fell against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of cedar, coffee, and gun oil. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to be a protected daughter. ""How is she, Dad? Where is Sadie?""
""She is asleep at my house under your mother's care,"" Dad said softly, kissing the crown of my head. ""The doctors treated her for first-degree frostbite on her big toes and minor surface hypothermia. No permanent tissue damage, thank God. She drank three cups of hot cocoa, ate a grilled cheese sandwich, and passed out hugging my old army jacket. She is safe, Val. Completely safe.""
""And Trevor?"" I asked, my voice turning to steel.
One of the federal agents stepped forward, extending a hand. ""Mrs. Sutton, I’m Special Agent Miller, IRS-CI. Your husband is currently in holding cell three. When he realized your father had preserved the mirrored images of his external drives before his corporate lawyer arrived, his defense collapsed. But he’s demanding to speak with you before he signs any formal plea proffer.""
""I want to see him,"" I said without hesitation.
""Valerie, you don't have to face him,"" my father warned, his dark eyes narrowing. ""The feds have him dead to rights on wire fraud, identity theft, child neglect, and aggravated child endangerment. He is looking at fifteen to twenty-five years in federal prison.""
""I need to see him, Dad,"" I insisted. ""I need him to look me in the eye.""
Two minutes later, the heavy steel door of interview room B buzzed open. Trevor sat at the metal table, stripped of his designer blazer, wearing a standard orange county holding jumpsuit. His hair was disheveled, dark circles bruised his eyes, and his hands were cuffed to a welded ring on the table.
When he saw me enter, a pathetic, desperate spark of hope flared in his gaze.
""Val! Oh God, Val, baby, please!"" he choked, leaning forward until the chain rattled. ""You have to tell them! This is a massive misunderstanding! Arthur went completely psycho! He broke down our door, he called in his old military buddies to frame me—""
""Sadie hid the pink USB drive in her hollowed-out book of fairy tales, Trevor,"" I said, my voice eerily calm as I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down.
Trevor froze. The color instantly drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.
""She told my father where it was while they were in the ambulance,"" I continued, leaning forward and resting my forearms on the cold steel table. ""The police retrieved it this morning. It has everything. Every offshore routing number, every forged signature document, your WhatsApp messages with Vanessa Sterling discussing how you were going to leave Sadie with Evelyn once the money cleared... and the emails where you joked about me being stuck working eighty hours a week in Germany while you two drank champagne in the Swiss Alps.""
""Val... listen to me,"" Trevor stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the one-way observation mirror. Sweat beaded across his forehead. ""Vanessa manipulated me! She was blackmailing me with company data! I was doing it to protect our family's future! You were always working, Val! You were never home! I was lonely, I was stressed—""
""You locked our nine-year-old child outside in twelve-degree weather because she held the key to your escape,"" I said, cutting him off with razor-sharp precision. ""You watched her cry through the blinds. You let your mother close the curtains on her.""
""I was going to let her back in!"" he screamed, his voice cracking into a desperate shriek. ""I just needed her to tell me where the drive was! I was panicked! You know I love Sadie! I’m her father!""
""A father protects his child with his life,"" I whispered, standing up slowly and looking down at him with pure disgust. ""You are not a father, Trevor. You are a coward, a thief, and a monster. And you are going to spend the next two decades rotting in a cage, watching your youth vanish while your daughter grows up magnificent, happy, and completely free of your shadow.""

""Valerie! Don't walk out of here! If you divorce me now, the legal fees will bankrupt us both! Valerie!""
I turned my back on him. As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind me, his frantic screams were swallowed by the concrete walls.
