Chapter 4 - The General's Retribution

""Arthur?!"" Trevor’s voice cracked through the receiver, shrill, indignant, and dripping with panicked entitlement. ""Have you lost your absolute mind?! You just kicked my front door down! That is felony destruction of property! Get out of my house before I have you arrested!""
""Step forward and try to arrest me, boy,"" Dad growled, his voice dangerously low. ""Step within arm’s reach. Give me an excuse.""
Even thousands of miles away, I could feel the sheer, suffocating terror my father radiated when provoked. Trevor was thirty-eight, a six-foot-two corporate account director who spent his weekends golfing and preening in designer suits, but he was utterly hollow inside. Against a decorated combat veteran who had survived multiple deployments in brutal terrain, Trevor was nothing more than wet cardboard.
""You left a nine-year-old child outside in sub-freezing weather for over an hour,"" Dad said, each word hitting like a sledgehammer. ""Her core body temperature is dropping. Her extremities are numb. You sat in this heated foyer while your daughter begged at the glass.""
""It was disciplinary!"" Evelyn shrieked in the background, her voice shrill and trembling with aristocratic offense. ""She was throwing a tantrum! She ruined Trevor’s thousand-dollar Italian leather bag! Trevor was merely teaching her a lesson about boundaries and respecting property! She was perfectly safe on the patio for a few minutes!""
""A few minutes?"" Dad roared, and the sheer volume made my phone speaker crackle. ""The thermometer reads twelve degrees, you sadistic old bat! That is not discipline. That is felony child endangerment and attempted manslaughter! Look at her school backpack sitting right here on the kitchen counter—it’s soaked! You poured water over her belongings!""
""Arthur, stop! Valerie!"" Trevor suddenly shouted, clearly realizing my father’s phone was connected to something. ""Valerie, are you listening to this?! Your crazy father has broken into our home! He’s threatening me and my mother! Tell him to leave right now! I am the head of this household!""
""Trevor,"" I said, speaking for the first time. My voice was completely devoid of warmth, completely hollowed out by hatred. ""If my father doesn't break your jaw, I promise you I will when my plane touches down. Don't you ever speak to me again.""
""Valerie, listen to me, you don't understand the whole story—"" Trevor started frantically.
""Silence!"" Dad barked.
I heard heavy footsteps moving through the dining room toward Trevor’s private home office.
""Arthur, don't go in there! That’s private! That’s company business!"" Trevor screamed, the terror in his voice spiking to a completely unprecedented level. This wasn't the sound of a man caught in a domestic dispute; this was the sheer, pants-soiling panic of a criminal watching his vault being blown open.
""You were having a 'client dinner,' were you, Trevor?"" Dad sneered. ""Then why is the dining room table empty? Why is your laptop open on your desk with four external hard drives plugged into it? And why are there two packed suitcases sitting by your closet?""
""Don't touch those! That’s an invasion of privacy! Evelyn, call the sheriff!""
""The Dublin police are already pulling into the driveway,"" Dad stated with icy satisfaction. Through the open front doorway, the distant wail of police sirens grew louder, their red and blue strobes reflecting off the snow outside. ""And unlike you, Trevor, the lead officer on duty tonight happens to be a former sergeant who served under my command in the 82nd Airborne. Let's see what he thinks of your disciplinary methods... and whatever you've got running on these screens.""
A loud thump sounded, followed by Trevor letting out a pathetic squeak as Dad apparently shoved him firmly into a leather armchair.

""Arthur, please!"" Evelyn wailed. ""Have some decency! We are family!""
""You stopped being family the second my granddaughter’s skin turned blue,"" Dad answered. ""Officers! In here. The perpetrator is seated. The victim is secured in my vehicle. Secure this perimeter immediately.""
