Chapter 8 - The Price of Greed

The reality of their choices hit Madison Vale and Adrian Sterling with the force of an avalanche over the next six months.

Madison was formally terminated from Whitmore Enterprises for corporate espionage and gross misconduct.

Her luxury apartment on Elm Street, funded entirely through fraudulent company stipends, was reclaimed through eviction proceedings.

With her professional reputation destroyed in the national financial sector, no major firm would touch her resume.

She was forced to move into a cramped, noisy two-bedroom rental on the far south side of the city with her newborn son, Eli.

Adrian moved into the spare bedroom, his days consumed by grueling meetings with court-appointed public defenders.

Without the endless stream of corporate expense accounts, the glamorous veneer of their romance vanished overnight.

Every morning began with screaming matches over formula prices, diaper costs, and impending legal bills.

“You told me you controlled that company!” Madison shrieked one rainy afternoon, slamming a package of generic diapers on the counter.

“You told me Claire was a trust-fund lightweight who didn't know how to balance a checkbook!”

“She was!” Adrian screamed back, gripping his hair in frustration. “Her father protected her! How was I supposed to know she kept the master proxy?”

“You ruined my career, Adrian!” she cried, tears of bitter regret streaming down her face.

“I was an executive vice president! Now I’m unemployable, living in a shoebox, raising a baby on food assistance!”

“And what about me?!” Adrian roared, his voice cracking with hysteria.

“I am going to federal prison in sixty days! I am looking at forty-eight months at Terre Haute!”

In the adjacent bedroom, baby Eli began to wail, his frightened cries filling the drafty, dilapidated apartment.

Adrian sank onto the battered sofa, burying his head in his rough hands.

He remembered the marble floors of the Gold Coast penthouse, the private jets, the five-star dinners in Milan and London.

He had thrown away a beautiful, brilliant wife, a healthy daughter, and an executive fortune for a fleeting ego trip.

He had believed he was a master manipulator playing chess with amateurs.

He never realized he was merely a guest in a house built by giants, allowed to stay only as long as he showed respect.

And now, the door was locked forever from the inside.
