Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

Adrian pulled out the chair slowly, his earlier bravado crumbling into defensive stuttering.

“This is a coordinated ambush,” he said, looking at the board members he had handpicked over the last two years.

“Robert, Linda, you know what I’ve done for the stock value of this company! We just posted record profits!”

Linda Torres, a veteran institutional investor, pushed her reading glasses down her nose and stared at him with sheer disgust.

“You posted profits while routing three hundred thousand dollars through a shell consultancy to pay for an apartment lease on Elm Street.”

“An apartment occupied exclusively by Vice President Madison Vale,” she added, tapping a real estate lease contract.

Adrian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing nervously above his open collar.

“Madison was leading the Midwest acquisitions team. That housing arrangement was an executive relocation perk approved internally—”

“Approved by whom, Adrian?” I asked quietly, speaking for the first time.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent as my voice echoed softly off the acoustic wood paneling.

Adrian looked at me, attempting to project the gentle, pleading gaze he had used to manipulate me for half a decade.

“Claire, please. You don't understand the complexities of corporate relocation packages.”

“You’ve been out of the office for years focusing on domestic life. Let's talk about this privately at home.”

Marcus Reed stood up, opening his leather portfolio and sliding a series of financial records across the glass.

“Mr. Sterling, your signature appears on seven separate expense authorizations routed directly to Madison Vale's private LLC.”

“Those authorizations bypassed the audit committee using a counterfeit proxy delegation attributed to Ms. Whitmore.”

The room seemed to shrink around Adrian as the forensic auditor placed the biometric signature analysis on the projector screen.

The signature on the documents wasn't mine; it was a digital copy lifted from our joint tax returns from two years ago.

“You didn't just cheat on your pregnant wife, Adrian,” Evelyn Shaw stated with chilling precision.

“You committed federal wire fraud to subsidize your mistress while using Claire's inheritance as collateral.”

Adrian slammed his palms onto the table, his composure finally shattering completely.

“She gave me full proxy! She signed the voting power agreement the week after our wedding!”

“I built this empire while she sat home arranging flowers! You can't strip me of my title based on domestic gossip!”

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out an embossed legal document bearing my father's original wax seal, and laid it flat.

“The proxy agreement had a sunset provision, Adrian,” I said, looking directly into his panic-stricken eyes.

“It automatically terminated upon the intentional concealment of material personal liabilities that threaten the integrity of the firm.”

“As of midnight, your proxy was nullified.”

“And as the fifty-two percent majority shareholder, I have called for an immediate vote of no confidence.”
