Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

At seven-forty-five, Adrian’s black town car pulled into the executive driveway beneath Whitmore Tower.

He looked haggard, his designer shirt wrinkled from sleeping in a hospital recliner, but his jaw remained set with arrogant confidence.

He assumed he would slip into his private office, wash his face, and draft a tearful peace offering before I woke up.

When his platinum executive keycard flashed red at the elevator bank, his brows drew together in sharp irritation.

“Frank, what is wrong with this scanner?” Adrian barked, tapping the card against the plastic housing.

Frank stepped out from behind the security desk, flanked by two armed building guards.

“Mr. Sterling, your credentials have been restricted by order of the board.”

“You are requested to proceed immediately to Boardroom A on the tenth floor.”

Adrian scoffed, adjusting his cuffs with an impatient flick of his wrists.

“This is absurd. I am the Chief Executive Officer of this organization. Call Evelyn Shaw right now.”

“Chairwoman Shaw is currently seated in the boardroom waiting for you, sir,” Frank answered without flinching.

Fuming with suppressed rage, Adrian took the guest elevator up to the tenth floor, his heavy wingtips clacking against the marble.

He pushed open the heavy double doors of Boardroom A, prepared to unleash a furious reprimand on the security staff.

The words died in his throat the instant he looked at the head of the conference table.

I was sitting in the high-backed leather chair that had belonged to my father, my hands folded calmly over the mahogany surface.

To my left sat Evelyn Shaw; to my right sat the firm's chief legal counsel and four forensic auditors.

Around the table sat all eleven voting board members, their expressions grim and unforgiving.

“Claire?” Adrian gasped, his eyes darting frantically across the room.

“What is this? What are you doing out of bed? You’re eight months pregnant!”

He tried to step forward, offering a hurried, patronizing smile designed to disarm the room.

“Everyone, I apologize for my wife’s emotional state. We are dealing with an intensely private family situation—”

“Sit down, Adrian,” Evelyn Shaw said, her voice cutting through his performance like a whip.

Adrian paused, realizing for the first time that none of the board members were returning his smile.

“This is an emergency governance meeting, Mr. Sterling,” Evelyn continued, sliding a thick manila folder toward the empty chair.

“You are here to answer for fourteen counts of fiduciary breach, self-dealing, and unlawful misappropriation of corporate assets.”

Adrian’s face drained of color as he looked down at the chair at the opposite end of the long table.

He had walked into the room expecting a jealous wife’s tantrum.

Instead, he found himself staring down the barrel of a corporate firing squad.
