Chapter 8 - The Embezzler’s Final Bluster

""This is insane!"" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table and standing up in a desperate attempt to dominate the room. ""I made this company! I brought in the Aspen contracts! I brought in the luxury clients! You're going to destroy my reputation over some accounting errors?""
""They aren't accounting errors, Daniel,"" Samuel Harris replied, pulling a second document from his briefcase. ""They are federal felonies. Wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.""
Daniel flinched as if struck. ""Felonies? You wouldn't dare. Claire, you wouldn't send your own husband to prison! Think of what this will do to our family! Think of what my parents will go through!""
""Your parents?"" I asked, arching an eyebrow. ""You mean the parents who spent eight years treating me like an uncultured servant while living off my business? The mother who told me on Christmas Eve that Vanessa was 'more comfortable in their social circle'?""
Daniel swallowed hard, the blood rushing out of his face once again. ""She... she was confused! She didn't know the whole story!""
""She knew enough to happily accept thousands of dollars in stolen luxury gifts every Christmas,"" I said. ""And as for our marriage, Daniel, you ended it the second you handed my plane ticket to another woman and sent me a mocking photo telling me to stop being dramatic.""
""Claire, please,"" he pleaded, dropping all pretense of executive arrogance and sinking back into his chair with his head in his hands. ""I made a mistake. Vanessa tricked me! She manipulated me into believing she had connections that could take Northstar to the next level! I was doing it for us! For our future!""
""Save the performance for the prosecutor, Daniel,"" Samuel Harris said coldly. ""We have already served Vanessa Price with an emergency eviction order for the Manhattan penthouse. In fact, when she attempted to remove two hundred thousand dollars worth of corporate-purchased art and designer furnishings from the apartment this morning, building security intercepted her and held her until the NYPD arrived.""
Daniel’s head snapped up, his eyes bulging in pure horror. ""What?""
""She is currently in custody at the 19th Precinct,"" Samuel added without emotion. ""And she was more than happy to provide the detectives with every text message, email, and bank statement proving that you orchestrated the entire embezzlement scheme.""
Daniel slumped back into the chair, completely broken. The betrayal cut both ways, and the fragile house of cards he had built on greed and lies had collapsed entirely upon his head.
""Here is what is going to happen, Mr. Whitmore,"" Arthur Sterling announced from the monitor. ""The board has unanimously voted to accept your termination effective immediately. You will surrender your company phone, your building access badge, and your company vehicle keys to the security personnel standing behind you.""
The two security officers stepped forward, flanking Daniel’s chair with broad, immovable frames.
""Claire has graciously agreed to withhold the formal criminal referral on one condition,"" Samuel said, sliding a final legal document toward Daniel. ""You will sign a full confession of financial malfeasance, forfeit all claims to any Northstar equity or severance, and sign an uncontested marital separation agreement renouncing any claim to alimony, real estate, or corporate assets.""
Daniel looked at the pen resting on the paper, his hands trembling so violently he could barely hold it.
""And if I refuse?"" he whispered, his voice trembling.
May you like
""If you refuse,"" I said softly, leaning forward, ""Samuel will walk across the street to the District Attorney's office with the forensic audit file in ten minutes. You will spend the next five to ten years in an upstate correctional facility, and your family will be sued for every penny of corporate funds you channeled into their vacations and gifts.""
Daniel stared at the document. He had nowhere to run, no cards left to play, and no one left to charm. With a shaking hand, he picked up the pen and pressed the tip to the signature line.
