Chapter 3 - The Front Desk Reality Check

The suffocating silence at the breakfast table felt far colder than the sub-zero wind howling outside the lounge windows. Patricia sat frozen, her lips pressed into a thin, furious line, while Robert cleared his throat awkwardly, suddenly very interested in the snow piling up on the patio railing.

""Daniel,"" Patricia hissed under her breath, leaning across the table with wide, panicked eyes. ""What is the meaning of this? Pay the man and let's get out of here. People are staring!""

Daniel’s fingers trembled slightly as he fumbled through his designer wallet. He had spent years living entirely on Northstar’s corporate tabs, writing off his personal wardrobe, five-star meals, and luxury cars as ""operational business overhead."" His personal checking account was notoriously bare, largely because he spent every cent of his actual salary on lavish wristwatches and personal vanity projects to maintain his illusion of independent wealth.

He pulled out his personal credit card—a basic rewards card with an eight-thousand-dollar limit that he rarely touched.

""Take this,"" Daniel muttered between clenched teeth, shoving the card into the waiter’s hand. ""Run it. And don't make a scene.""

The waiter nodded curtly and stepped away. Moments later, the transaction went through, leaving Daniel with an instant phone alert: Your remaining credit balance is $412.18.

His personal credit line was completely maxed out on a single breakfast.

""Let’s go back to the chalet,"" Daniel snapped, standing up abruptly without waiting for Vanessa to collect her coat. ""I need to make a call to our financial department. Some incompetent junior clerk at Northstar must have botched the holiday authorization protocols.""

""Yes, of course,"" Vanessa agreed quickly, though her eyes narrowed slightly as she observed Daniel’s frantic demeanor. The confident, untouchable millionaire she thought she had conquered suddenly looked like a cornered animal sweating through a four-hundred-dollar base layer.

The twenty-minute drive back up the winding mountain road to the Whispering Pines Private Chalet was excruciatingly quiet. Patricia complained bitterly about the service, Robert grumbled about his ruined morning cigar, and Daniel kept redialing Northstar’s corporate hotline, only to be met with an automated holiday recording: Northstar Hospitality headquarters are closed for the Christmas holiday. For client emergencies, contact your primary account director.

When their luxury SUV pulled up to the gated entrance of the multi-million-dollar chalet, Daniel felt a momentary surge of relief. At least they had the opulent six-bedroom lodge, the private heated pool, and the fully stocked wine cellar to retreat to until he sorted this nonsense out on Monday.

They walked through the grand timber-framed front doors, laughing off the morning's inconvenience, only to find the general manager of the chalet resort, a tall woman named Evelyn, standing by the concierge desk with a clipboard in hand.

""Ah, Mr. Whitmore,"" Evelyn greeted them, her voice impeccably professional and utterly devoid of warmth. ""I’m glad you’ve returned. We were just preparing to send our bell staff up to your suite.""

""Good,"" Daniel said, straightening his posture and trying to regain his commanding executive tone. ""We'd like the private chef to prepare a prime rib dinner for six tonight around seven o’clock. And send up two more cases of the Pinot Noir.""

Evelyn offered a polite, chilly smile that didn't reach her eyes. ""I’m afraid that won't be possible, Mr. Whitmore. Check-out time was eleven o'clock this morning.""

Daniel froze. Patricia stopped dead in her tracks, clutching her purse.

""Excuse me?"" Daniel scoffed, stepping closer. ""Check-out? We have this entire chalet reserved through New Year’s Day. Five more nights. I am Daniel Whitmore, Head of Partnerships for Northstar Hospitality!""

""Yes, we are well aware of who you are, sir,"" Evelyn replied smoothly, turning the clipboard toward him. ""And late last night, Northstar Hospitality’s founder, majority owner, and Chief Executive Officer, Claire Whitmore, officially canceled the remaining five nights of your corporate booking. She released the reservation back to our inventory.""

The name struck the room like a physical blow. Vanessa took half a step backward, her perfectly composed face pale with sudden apprehension.

""Claire did what?"" Patricia shrieked, losing all composure. ""That little secretary has no right! Daniel is the head of the company!""

""Claire Whitmore is the sole legal signatory on the master hospitality contract,"" Evelyn stated plainly, her tone brooking no argument. ""The first night was prepaid, which expired thirty minutes ago. The remaining nights have already been rebooked by another private party arriving at three o'clock this afternoon. Our housekeeping staff is already in your rooms packing your belongings.""

May you like

""You can't do that!"" Daniel roared, his voice cracking with humiliation as several resort guests turned to look. ""Reinstate the booking right now! Put it on my corporate line!""

""Your corporate lines have all been marked as revoked by your headquarters, Mr. Whitmore,"" Evelyn replied, not flinching for a second. ""If you wish to remain on property in one of our smaller village suites, the rate is thirty-two hundred dollars per night, payable upfront via guaranteed cashier's check or personal wire transfer. Otherwise, I must ask you and your party to vacate the premises within forty-five minutes.""
