Chapter 2 - Frostbite and Declined Plastic

The sun over Aspen broke through a crystal-clear mountain sky, painting the snow-capped Rockies in dazzling shades of gold and violet. At the private members' lounge of the High Peak Ski Lodge, Daniel Whitmore was holding court at a corner booth, basking in the envious looks of other wealthy vacationers.

Dressed in brand-new, top-tier designer ski gear that still had the tags fresh in his luggage, Daniel looked like the picture of effortless affluence. Vanessa Price sat beside him, clad in a sleek, tailored designer ski suit, her blonde hair falling in artfully tousled waves around her diamond-studded ears. Across the table, Patricia Whitmore adjusted her cashmere scarf, holding a mimosa glass delicately between manicured fingers.

""I must say, Daniel darling,"" Patricia purred, leaning forward so the surrounding tables could hear, ""this is exactly the caliber of holiday our family deserves. That quaint little suburban house Claire insists on keeping simply depresses my spirits every winter. A man of your standing belongs in Aspen, entertaining real peers.""

""Mom, please, don't mention Claire,"" Daniel chuckled, waving his hand with theatrical dismissal. ""She’s happy at home organizing her kitchen cabinets or doing whatever it is she does with her spreadsheets. She gets overwhelmed by upscale environments. Vanessa, on the other hand, knows how to appreciate the finer things.""

Vanessa beamed, placing a manicured hand over Daniel's forearm. ""You're far too generous, Daniel. We really shouldn't have ordered the Beluga caviar for breakfast, but it was just so decadent.""

""Nonsense,"" Daniel smiled, flashing the charismatic grin that had once charmed me into believing he was my partner. ""Only the best for my guests. Waiter! Bring us another bottle of Dom Pérignon, and bring my father another glass of the twenty-five-year single malt.""

Robert Whitmore nodded with deep satisfaction, crossing his legs by the crackling stone fireplace. ""It’s good to see you running things like a real Whitmore, son. Taking charge.""

When the lavish breakfast concluded, the server approached the table and discreetly placed a leather folio in front of Daniel. The bill came out to just under four thousand dollars, including several premium bottles of champagne and vintage spirits.

Daniel pulled out the sleek black Northstar Hospitality corporate card with practiced nonchalance. ""Take care of this, will you? And add a twenty-five percent gratuity for the excellent service.""

""Right away, sir,"" the waiter said politely, taking the card and stepping toward the POS terminal near the bar.

Daniel leaned back, stretching his arms over the leather cushions. He checked his phone, expecting a barrage of frantic, tearful text messages from me begging him to come home. Instead, his inbox was blank. Not a single missed call. Not a single pleading message. A slight twinge of irritation crossed his mind; Claire was supposed to be weeping over her homemade Christmas cake, not ignoring him.

""Is something wrong, darling?"" Vanessa asked softly, tilting her head.

""Nothing,"" Daniel scoffed. ""Just surprised my wife hasn't tried to guilt-trip me yet. She probably knows she has no leverage.""

At that moment, the server returned to the table, his posture noticeably stiffer and his smile gone. He held the folio in both hands, stopping right beside Daniel’s shoulder.

""Excuse me, Mr. Whitmore,"" the waiter said quietly, leaning down to avoid drawing the attention of nearby diners. ""I’m afraid this card has been declined.""

Daniel chuckled condescendingly, rolling his eyes at his mother. ""That's absurd. Run it again. Your machine is probably having satellite connection issues because of the snowstorm.""

""I did run it again, sir. Twice,"" the waiter replied, his voice firm and unyielding. ""The terminal returns a specific code: Card Suspended by Corporate Administrator. It will not authorize the charge.""

Patricia gasped, nearly spilling her mimosa. ""How dare you! Do you have any idea who my son is? He is an executive vice president! Check your equipment immediately!""

""Mother, please, let me handle this,"" Daniel said, his face flushing crimson as he felt the eyes of a nearby tech CEO glance toward them. He reached into his leather wallet and pulled out a different card—the secondary corporate line he had assigned to himself. ""Try this one. There must be a temporary holiday spending cap on the main account.""

The waiter took the card without a word and walked back to the counter. Daniel tapped his fingers impatiently against the polished mahogany table, forcing a tight, confident smile for Vanessa.

""Just a glitch,"" Daniel assured her. ""Banks get overzealous with fraud protection during holiday travel. It happens all the time.""

Three minutes later, the waiter returned. His expression was completely stone-faced.

""I'm sorry, sir. That card has also been frozen by the issuer. Do you have a personal card or cash to settle this four-thousand-dollar balance?""

The color completely drained from Daniel’s face. A cold, suffocating knot tightened in his throat.
