Chapter 7 - Patricia’s Desperate Plea

By mid-January, the social fallout in our community was absolute.

In elite social circles, betrayal is gossiped about, but financial ruin and public fraud are fatal. The Whitmore family, who had spent nearly a decade looking down their noses at everyone while bragging about their son’s miraculous wealth, became instant pariahs.

Their country club membership was quietly revoked due to non-payment of annual dues. The lease on Robert and Patricia’s luxury townhome was terminated by the property group, forcing them to downsize into a cramped, two-bedroom apartment thirty miles outside the city, paid for by Robert's meager social security check.

One Tuesday afternoon, as I exited the Northstar headquarters after finalizing a multi-million-dollar acquisition in Miami, a figure lunged toward me from behind a concrete planter.

""Claire! Claire, please!""

My two private security guards immediately stepped forward, blocking the path.

It was Patricia.

She looked unrecognizable. The immaculate platinum blonde hair she had maintained every week was grown out with gray roots. Her designer coat had a missing button, and she wore no makeup, revealing deep, frantic lines around her eyes.

""Let her speak,"" I told the guards, keeping my distance.

Patricia fell to her knees right there on the cold sidewalk, sobbing openly. ""Claire, I'm begging you! You have to drop the criminal charges against Daniel! The state prosecutor is talking about five to seven years in prison! He has a felony indictment hanging over his head! He can't get a job anywhere! Even the budget car dealerships won't hire him!""

I looked down at her with neither anger nor triumph. Just pure, unyielding indifference.

""You told me on Christmas Eve that Vanessa was much more suited to your family, Patricia,"" I said quietly. ""You told me I would spend the entire holiday complaining about the cost of things.""

""I was stupid! I was arrogant!"" she wailed, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. ""Daniel lied to us! He told us he owned sixty percent of Northstar! He told us you were just his secretary before you got married! We didn't know, Claire! If we had known it was your money, we never would have treated you that way!""

A bitter, humorless smile crossed my lips. ""And that, Patricia, is the most pathetic thing you've ever said.""

She blinked through her tears, confused.

""You only think people deserve basic respect, kindness, and decency if they hold the checkbook,"" I said, stepping closer so only she could hear. ""For eight years, I cooked your dinners, organized your holidays, bought your gifts, and took your insults with a smile, because I loved your son and wanted to keep peace in my family. You treated me like dirt because you thought I had no power. Now you're on your knees because you found out I hold all of it.""

""Claire... please... he's your husband...""

""My divorce was finalized yesterday on expedited grounds of irreconcilable fraud,"" I said, pulling my leather gloves tighter. ""I am not your daughter-in-law. And your son is a common thief who will face the legal consequences of his own choices. Good afternoon, Patricia.""

I stepped around her, got into the back of my waiting town car, and closed the door, leaving her weeping on the pavement.
