Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Forty-eight hours later, the private elevator of Northstar Hospitality’s high-rise headquarters in downtown Chicago chimed softly.

The holiday break was technically underway, but the twenty-fourth-floor executive boardroom was fully illuminated. Seated around the polished walnut table were Northstar’s five senior board members, Arthur Vance, two forensic auditors, and myself. I sat at the head of the table, dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal suit, my mother’s gold watch resting on my wrist. The empty seat to my right had Daniel’s brass nameplate removed.

The heavy glass doors swung open with a violent shove.

Daniel stormed in. He looked exhausted, haggard, and disheveled. His tie was crooked, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and the arrogance that usually defined his swagger had curdled into raw, desperate fury.

""Claire!"" he bellowed, ignoring the presence of the board. ""What the hell is the meaning of this? You had my phone wiped! You locked my apartment keycards! My mother had to borrow money from her sister just to take a bus back from the airport!""

""Take a seat, Daniel,"" Arthur Vance said calmly, gesturing toward an isolated leather chair at the far end of the room.

""I don't take orders from you, Arthur!"" Daniel spat, glaring directly at me. ""Claire, stop this insane tantrum right now. We had an argument. Fine! I shouldn't have brought Vanessa to Aspen! It was bad judgment, okay? But you don't burn down our company and humiliate my family in front of the entire country over a domestic dispute!""

""Our company?"" I spoke for the first time, my voice quiet, measured, and devastatingly clear.

The entire room fell into pin-drop silence.

I slid a thick leather folder across the glossy table toward him.

""Open it, Daniel.""

He hesitated, his chest heaving, before yanking the folder open. His eyes darted across the first page, and the color instantly drained from his cheeks.

""What is this?"" he whispered.

""That is a comprehensive audit of the last three years of your departmental budget,"" I said. ""Along with certified bank records for 'V-P Advisory Partners,' an offshore entity registered under Vanessa Price’s sister's maiden name. You funneled eighty-four thousand dollars in direct embezzlement, another one hundred and twenty thousand in fraudulent personal travel, and charged three family vehicles to our commercial insurance policy.""

""I... I was building client relationships,"" Daniel stammered, glancing frantically around the table at the stone-faced board members. ""Julian, Thomas... you know me! I built our luxury portfolio! I brought in the Aspen partnerships!""

Julian Croft, our oldest board member and an investor who had known my family for thirty years, leaned forward. ""Daniel, you didn't build those partnerships. You showed up to golf tournaments and signed your name on agreements Claire spent eight months structuring. You were a figurehead. An expensive, replaceable ornament.""

""Furthermore,"" Arthur chimed in, sliding a second document forward, ""this board has unanimously voted to terminate your employment for cause, effective immediately. We are also filing an emergency petition with the Cook County Chancery Court to freeze all marital asset divisions pending the criminal restitution of embezzled funds.""

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. ""Claire... we’re married. You can't do this to your husband.""

""The man I married was supposed to be my partner,"" I replied, looking him dead in the eyes without an ounce of pity. ""You were never my partner, Daniel. You were a parasite who mistook my patience for weakness. You have ten minutes to clean out your desk under armed escort.""
