Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa Price

While Daniel was wandering the freezing streets trying to secure a cheap motel room, Vanessa Price was facing her own reckoning across town.

Vanessa had fancied herself a master strategist. She had spent a year playing Daniel like a fiddle, flattering his massive ego, laughing at his tired jokes, and convincing him that a brilliant man like him deserved a glamorous, ambitious muse by his side rather than an ""unremarkable bookkeeper"" wife. She had envisioned stepping into Northstar as the new vice president of marketing once Daniel pushed Claire out.

Instead, she arrived at Northstar headquarters the following Monday morning to find her security badge revoked at the turnstile.

Two uniformed police detectives, accompanied by Arthur Vance and Northstar’s director of human resources, stepped out of the executive lounge and approached her in the crowded lobby.

""Vanessa Price?"" Detective Miller asked, displaying his badge.

Vanessa froze, clutching her designer latte. ""Yes? What is this about? I have a client meeting upstairs.""

""You don't work here anymore, Ms. Price,"" Arthur said clearly, his voice carrying across the marble lobby where dozens of corporate peers were watching. ""You've been terminated for cause, effective immediately.""

""You can't fire me!"" she gasped, looking around in horror as people pulled out their phones. ""Daniel Whitmore is the head of partnerships! He brought me into this firm!""

""Mr. Whitmore was fired on Friday for grand larceny and embezzlement,"" Detective Miller stated flatly. ""And right now, we have a warrant for your arrest regarding the eighty-four thousand dollars routed to V-P Advisory Partners under falsified vendor invoices.""

""No! That wasn't me! Daniel set that up! He told me it was a performance bonus!"" she shrieked, backing away toward the revolving doors.

""You signed the corporate registration forms, Ms. Price. You also deposited the cashier's checks into your personal checking account,"" the detective replied, taking her by the arm and clicking a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists. ""You have the right to remain silent.""

Dozens of junior analysts and executives watched in stunned silence as Vanessa was led out through the glass doors into the back of a marked police cruiser, her designer coat dragging against the slushy pavement.

Within two hours, the story had leaked to local business blogs and social media. The narrative Daniel had tried so hard to build—the suave executive and his chic protégé running a hospitality empire—was completely dismantled. In its place was the sordid, embarrassing truth: an insecure middle manager and an opportunistic clerk caught stealing from the very woman who built the empire from scratch.

When Vanessa was finally granted her one phone call from the precinct holding cell, she didn't call a lawyer. She called Daniel, screaming obscenities so loud the desk sergeant had to pull the receiver away from her ear. She blamed him for ruining her life, promising that if she went down, she would testify against him on every single charge the district attorney brought forward.

The golden partnership had officially cannibalized itself.
