Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Ethan clutched his chest, the room spinning around him as the realization of his catastrophic blunder crushed him into the floor.
"No... no! This is invalid! She tricked me!" Ethan shouted, lunging forward toward Marcus, only to be grabbed violently by two undercover federal agents who pinned his arms behind his back.
"Ethan Brooks," Richard stated loudly, flashing his federal badge in the center of the crowded restaurant. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, offshore money laundering, and conspiracy to commit aggravated murder by intentional administration of a controlled digitalis compound."
At the word murder, screams erupted from the dining room. Chloe Vance let out a blood-curdling shriek, trying to slip away toward the service exit, but two female officers blocked her path, slapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"I didn't know anything about pills!" Chloe screamed hysterically, tears streaking her mascara as she fought against the officers. "He told me she had a weak heart! He said she was going to pass away naturally in her sleep! I didn't poison anyone! Ethan, tell them I didn't know!"
Ethan didn't say a word. He was staring at me, his eyes filled with pure terror, disbelief, and the agonizing realization that the woman he had treated like a naive fool had orchestrated his complete annihilation.
"Laura... please," Ethan begged, tears finally spilling from his hazel eyes as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "Think about our seven years together. We can fix this. I was seduced, I was confused, I lost my mind! Don't send me to prison!"
I walked up to him until we were inches apart. I looked into the eyes that had watched me choke down poisoned capsules every night, the eyes that had smiled while planning to bury me in an unmarked grave.
"Do you remember what you whispered to Chloe on the stairs while I stood beside the cleaning cart?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet, carrying the weight of an unshakeable verdict.
Ethan swallowed hard, unable to speak.
"You told her, 'Trust me. I know exactly how to handle my wife.'" I tilted my head, offering him a cold, dazzling smile. "Turns out, Ethan, you didn't know me at all."

The federal agents dragged Ethan Brooks down the grand marble staircase of Le Cirque, kicking and sobbing like a child, past the glaring eyes of Boston's highest society. Chloe Vance followed behind him, her diamond ring confiscated as stolen property, weeping into her ruined designer dress.
I stood on the mezzanine terrace, raised my fresh glass of sparkling mineral water, and took a deep, refreshing sip of clean air. For the first time in six months, my heart beat strong, steady, and entirely free.
