Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

Ethan spun around in his chair, his eyes bulging as he took in the sight of his wife standing at the top of the mezzanine stairs, flanked by high-ranking corporate attorneys and law enforcement officers.
"Laura?!" Ethan gasped, scrambling to his feet so fast his chair clattered against the floor. "What are you doing here?! You're supposed to be in bed! You're violently ill!"
Chloe looked at me, then looked at the diamond choker around my neck, and then down at my face. Suddenly, her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing recognition.
"Wait... you..." Chloe stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "The cleaning lady... you were the maid with the cleaning cart on Thursday!"
Gasps rippled across the neighboring tables as the high-society patrons turned to watch the public spectacle unfold.
"Yes, Chloe," I said smoothly, descending the three stairs with majestic composure. "Though you forgot to leave a tip when you ordered me to scrub your spilled wine off my marble coffee table while wearing my anniversary robe."
Ethan’s face went from pale to ghostly white. His mind frantically tried to piece together the shattered puzzle of the last four days.
"Laura, listen to me," Ethan stammered, stepping in front of Chloe with arms raised in pathetic surrender. "This isn't what it looks like! Chloe is... she’s an investment advisor! We were celebrating the successful close of your logistics restructuring!"
"Is that why she’s wearing a six-carat Harry Winston engagement ring bought with my corporate credit line?" I asked, tossing an itemized credit statement onto the table, directly into the puddle of champagne.
"Ethan, tell her to shut up!" Chloe shrieked, backing away toward the wall. "Show her the papers! We own the company now! We own her house! She can't touch us!"
Ethan latched onto that desperate lie like a drowning man grasping a shark's fin. He pulled out the blue leather folio from his leather briefcase, waving it furiously in the air.
"She’s right, Laura!" Ethan yelled, his handsome features twisting into an ugly, venomous sneer as he discarded his loving husband mask entirely. "You signed the Power of Attorney! You signed the transfer of the estate! You handed over Bennett Holdings to me half an hour ago! You have nothing left, you pathetic, sick woman!"
Marcus Sterling stepped forward, adjusting his gold spectacles with a calm, pitying smile. "I believe you should inspect page forty-two of the legal annexes, Mr. Brooks."
Ethan blinked, his hands trembling as he furiously flipped through the crisp pages. His eyes darted across the text, scanning the legal clauses until his jaw dropped open in complete horror.

"What... what is this?" Ethan whimpered, his voice cracking into a high pitch. "Where is the Delaware LLC transfer?! Where are my offshore equity allocations?!"
"You didn't read what you gave her to sign, did you, Ethan?" Marcus remarked with icy satisfaction. "You were so blinded by your own arrogance and greed that you didn't even notice the folio swap. You didn't receive Bennett Holdings tonight. You formally surrendered every personal asset, took full liability for five million dollars in corporate debt, and signed a full legal confession of intentional marital fraud."
