Chapter 4 - The Homecoming

Sunday afternoon brought a torrential downpour that rattled the skylights of the lakeside estate. Ethan stood by the kitchen window, checking his gold Rolex every three minutes, rehearsing his loving husband routine in the reflection of the glass.

Chloe was safely tucked away in a downtown hotel, having spent the weekend spending my money on designer clothing Ethan had billed to my corporate card.

At exactly four o'clock, a yellow cab pulled into the long driveway. Ethan immediately grabbed a large umbrella and ran outside, playing the role of the devoted, doting partner to absolute perfection.

"Laura! Baby, you're back!" he called out, opening the cab door and shielding me with the umbrella as I stepped onto the wet gravel.

I wore a dark business suit, my makeup carefully applied to make my skin look pale, sickly, and utterly exhausted. I leaned into his shoulder, feigning a slight stumble that made him wrap an arm around my waist with practiced tenderness.

"Oh, Ethan, I'm so glad to be home," I whispered weakly, coughing softly into my scarf. "The Chicago board meetings were a nightmare. My chest has been aching all weekend."

Ethan’s eyes flickered with a brief spark of triumphant excitement before he quickly masked it with deep concern. "You poor thing. You work yourself far too hard, sweetheart. I told you that the company is draining the life out of you."

He carried my suitcase inside, setting it near the foyer stairs where Chloe’s wet umbrella had stood only thirty-six hours before. The house was immaculately cleaned, the scent of expensive wine and French perfume replaced by the citrus disinfectant Grace had scrubbed into every baseboard.

"I made you hot chamomile tea, Laura," Ethan said warmly, guiding me toward the leather sectional in the great room—the very sofa where Chloe had demanded I clean up after her. "And I took care of all those tedious estate and tax papers we talked about last week."

He walked over to the mantel, where my wedding portrait had been placed back in its prime position, completely devoid of dust. Beside the frame sat the thick blue leather folio.

"What papers were those again?" I asked, rubbing my temples as if struggling to focus through a haze of brain fog.

"Just the restructuring of the logistics holding company to minimize state corporate taxes," Ethan explained smoothly, sliding the documents onto the coffee table along with a silver Montblanc pen. "And the deed renewal for this property. If you sign them now, my courier can deliver them to the registry first thing tomorrow morning, and you won't have to think about business for a month."

I looked at the silver pen resting on the table. Thanks to Marcus Sterling’s genius team, the blue folio Ethan was looking at was not the one he had placed in the safe on Friday night.

Through a seamless late-night swap executed by Grace, the folio now contained an ironclad irrevocable trust that stripped Ethan of all power of attorney, revoked his access to any shared banking facilities, transferred his remaining corporate shares to me as liquidated damages for marital infidelity, and formally designated him as personally liable for all corporate tax obligations.

"You're sure this will give me peace of mind, Ethan?" I asked, looking up into the eyes of the man who had tried to poison my heart.

"I swear on my life, sweetheart," Ethan said, kissing my cheek with lips that felt like cold venom. "You trust me, don't you?"

"With all my heart," I replied, pressing the silver pen to the parchment and signing my name across the bottom of every single page.
