Chapter 8 - The Dominoes Fall

By 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the fallout was catastrophic.

Harrison Carter had delivered a four-hundred-page evidentiary brief directly to the Charlotte field office of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the North Carolina Attorney General's Office at dawn. By 8:30 AM, federal agents accompanied by state troopers had executed a search warrant on Evan’s primary corporate office at MedTech Solutions.

Claire sat in the corner booth of the Hawthorne Grand’s private dining room, watching the morning financial news on a mounted television screen.

“BREAKING NEWS: MedTech Senior Executive Named in Regional Ponzi and Offshore Fraud Probe.”

The ticker at the bottom of the screen rolled out details of the multi-million-dollar syndicate. MedTech had issued a press release within forty-five minutes of the raid, announcing the immediate termination of Evan Mercer for gross violations of corporate ethics and fraud, pledging full cooperation with federal authorities.

Marcus walked in carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of French roast coffee and two porcelain cups. He set the tray down and took a seat opposite Claire.

“His BMW was repossessed an hour ago,” Marcus remarked, pouring the coffee with a quiet smirk. “Turned out he hadn't made the lease payments in four months. The repo agent picked it up right outside his cheap motel near the interstate.”

Claire took a sip of her coffee, feeling the warm liquid settle her nerves. “Has he tried to reach out?”

“He called the hotel switchboard six times before eight o’clock,” Marcus replied. “Security flagged his number and warned him that any further contact would result in an immediate violation of the emergency restraining order Harrison secured on Saturday.”

A gentle knock sounded at the dining room door, and Sloane stepped inside. She was dressed in an impeccable charcoal wool suit, carrying a sleek leather portfolio.

“Good morning, partner,” Sloane said, offering a warm smile that looked completely different from the strained, exhausted woman Claire had met two days earlier.

“Good morning,” Claire replied, gesturing toward the seat beside her. “Did Harrison give you the update?”

“The feds froze his secondary shell accounts before he could even attempt to touch them,” Sloane said, setting her portfolio on the table. “The other two investors he defrauded are joining my firm’s civil suit for damages. But because our legal team handed the entire paper trail to the US Attorney on a silver platter, all of my original three hundred thousand was preserved in the court-supervised escrow.”

“And our joint savings is safe,” Claire added.

“More than safe,” Sloane said, leaning forward and opening her portfolio to reveal a detailed real estate prospectus. “I spent yesterday afternoon reviewing the commercial listings for the Blue Ridge properties you mentioned to Harrison.”

Claire’s heart skipped a beat. “The Blue Ridge properties?”

“The Highstone Estate in Asheville,” Sloane said, pointing to a photograph of a breathtaking historic stone manor nestled against the backdrop of rolling autumn mountains. “Ten bedrooms. Twenty-four acres of pristine mountain land. Commercial zoning already approved for luxury boutique hospitality. The previous owners went into foreclosure last month, and the property is heading to a bankruptcy auction next Friday.”

Claire stared at the photographs. The stone fireplaces, the wraparound timber porches, the mountain laurel covering the rolling hills—it was the exact dream she had nurtured in secret for ten years, the dream Evan had always dismissed as unrealistic whenever she brought it up.

“It’s beautiful, Sloane,” Claire whispered. “But an auction like that requires significant capital and operational backing.”

“You have fifteen years of elite luxury hotel management experience, Claire,” Sloane said, her tone entirely serious. “You are the best operational executive in this state. My family’s venture arm has three million dollars in private hospitality allocation waiting for the right project. If you walk away from corporate management, I’ll fund the entire acquisition. Fifty-fifty equity. You run the estate; I handle the financial syndication.”

Claire looked up from the prospectus into Sloane’s steady, confident gaze.

Forty-eight hours ago, Evan Mercer had tried to use these two women as instruments of his own greed, convinced that their mutual ignorance would keep him powerful. Instead, his betrayal had forged an alliance that was about to launch an enterprise he could never have conceived.

“I have thirty days of paid executive sabbatical stored up,” Claire said, a genuine, brilliant smile lighting up her face for the first time in days. “Let’s go buy an estate.”
