Chapter 5 - Gathering the Wolves

The boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Carter, Sterling & Hayes tower overlooked the sprawling Charlotte skyline. Floor-to-ceiling glass framed the bank towers that dominated the financial capital of the South.
Harrison Carter sat at the head of a twenty-foot mahogany conference table. In his late fifties, with silver-streaked hair, sharp blue eyes, and an impeccably tailored bespoke suit, he looked like a predator who had spent his entire adult life hunting corporate wolves for sport.
Beside him sat Evelyn Ross, the firm’s chief digital forensic analyst, whose fingers danced silently across a triple-monitor portable rig.
Claire had spent the last two hours laying out every financial document she had pulled from her home network, while Sloane provided the text exchanges, fake prospectuses, and wire receipts from the last six months.
Harrison leaned back in his leather executive chair, tapping an antique Montblanc pen against a yellow legal pad.
“It’s a classic Affinity-Advance hybrid scheme,” Harrison said, his baritone voice calm and measured. “Evan targeted high-net-worth individuals within his peripheral corporate network, using his wife’s pristine professional standing as social proof. He presented Claire as the silent administrative partner—a high-level hotel executive with impeccable credit—to give his bogus fund institutional credibility.”
Evelyn turned one of her screens toward the table.
“We cracked the secondary routing on the Belize shell,” Evelyn announced. “He didn't liquidate the $150,000 to crypto yet. It’s sitting in an escrow account with an offshore merchant bank in Saint Kitts, waiting for a final authorization transfer scheduled for Monday at midnight.”
Claire felt a surge of adrenaline. “Can we freeze it?”
“Not through standard civil litigation,” Harrison replied, shaking his head slightly. “If we file for an emergency injunction through the county court, Evan’s banking alerts will trigger instantly. He’ll execute an immediate digital ledger transfer, and the money will vanish into an un-traceable multi-signature wallet within sixty seconds. Once it crosses the blockchain, you’ll spend ten years and two million dollars in legal fees trying to recover pennies.”
“Then how do we get it back?” Sloane asked, her hands clenched on the table.
Harrison smiled—a thin, dangerous smile that did not reach his eyes.
“We use his own arrogance against him. Under North Carolina law, because Claire is listed on the corporate charter as the fifty-one percent managing officer—even though her signature was forged—she has statutory legal authority to access the corporate portal and revoke the designated power of attorney.”
“Meaning I can override his authority,” Claire realized, her eyes widening.
“Precisely,” Harrison nodded. “However, the offshore bank in Saint Kitts requires a dual-factor biometric authorization for any transaction exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. Evan configured the system using his own biometric facial scan and hardware security key.”
“The black thumb-drive key on his car ring,” Claire said instantly. “He never leaves the house without it. He keeps it attached to his BMW key fob.”
“Then that is our primary objective,” Harrison said, leaning forward. “Sloane, you agreed to meet Evan tonight at eight o’clock at the cellar lounge in the Duke Mansion. You will tell him that your family trust is prepared to wire five hundred thousand dollars to Apex Horizon to secure a controlling interest in his next commercial venture.”
“He will jump at that,” Sloane said. “He’s desperate. He needs fresh capital to keep the other investors from filing criminal complaints.”
“While he is meeting with Sloane, convinced that he has saved his financial skin,” Harrison continued, turning his gaze to Claire, “Claire will access his vehicle, secure the physical hardware key, and bring it to our digital forensic team stationed nearby. We will execute an emergency corporate revocation, pull the entire $150,000 back into a secure escrow trust under Claire’s maiden name, and secure the digital evidence of his fraud.”
Claire looked at Harrison. “And what about the criminal charges?”
“Once the money is safely in our escrow,” Harrison said quietly, “Evelyn submits our completed forensic brief to the Special Agents at the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the US Attorney’s Office. They have been monitoring secondary wire movements through that specific Belize shell for eight months under a broader regional syndicate investigation. Evan isn't just a cheat, Claire. He walked into an ongoing federal sting.”

Claire took a deep, steady breath. For seven years, she had protected Evan, covered his shortcomings, organized his life, and believed his promises. Tonight, she would dismantle him completely.
“Let’s do it,” Claire said.
