Chapter 10 - The Highstone Rebirth

One Year Later.
The late afternoon sun painted the Blue Ridge Mountains in breathtaking shades of crimson, gold, and deep violet.
Perched high upon the crest of the mountain ridge, the Highstone Inn & Spa gleamed like a sanctuary of timeless luxury. The restored historic stone walls were adorned with climbing ivy, the roaring outdoor hearths filled the mountain air with the rich aroma of burning cedar, and soft jazz drifted from the conservatory terrace overlooking the valley.
It was opening weekend, and every single suite had been booked solid six months in advance.
Claire Vance stood on the grand stone terrace, holding a glass of sparkling cider, watching the guests arrive along the winding private drive. Her hair was styled in an effortless chignon, her face glowing with health and vibrant energy. Over the last twelve months, she had overseen every detail of the estate's restoration—from the bespoke handmade furniture to the world-class farm-to-table dining program.
She was no longer managing someone else's empire. She was running her own.
A gentle chime from the terrace entrance caught her attention. Sloane walked out to join her, wearing an elegant cashmere sweater, holding a pristine copy of Southern Living Magazine.
“Have you seen the cover story yet?” Sloane asked with a beaming smile, handing the glossy publication to Claire.
Claire looked down at the cover. Featured prominently beneath the bold headline “The South’s Most Enchanting Mountain Retreat” was a photograph of the Highstone Inn’s grand stone portico, with Claire and Sloane standing side by side, recognized as the premier female hospitality partnership in the region.
“It looks stunning,” Claire said softly, feeling a swell of profound gratitude.
“We made the Forbes Luxury Guide shortlist this morning too,” Sloane added, clinking her glass against Claire’s. “Marcus called from the reception desk; he said the waitlist for holiday bookings has already hit four hundred reservations.”
Claire laughed, a light, genuine sound that echoed into the mountain breeze. Hiring Marcus away from the corporate hotel group to be her Director of Operations had been the best personnel decision she had ever made. He ran the staff with the same uncompromising standard of excellence they had built together in Charlotte.
“And what about our old friend?” Sloane asked, her tone dropping into subtle amusement.
Claire smiled calmly, taking a sip of her cider. “Harrison sent the sentencing confirmation this morning. Evan accepted a plea deal. Thirty-six months at the federal correctional facility in Butner, followed by three years of supervised probation and full restitution orders.”
There was no joy in the news, only the quiet satisfaction of justice served. Evan Mercer was paying for his choices, while the two women he had tried to exploit had transformed his betrayal into an empire of their own.
Marcus stepped out onto the terrace, holding a silver leather reservation ledger.
“Excuse me, Ms. Vance,” Marcus said with a warm grin. “The governor’s party has just arrived in the lobby for the ribbon-cutting dinner, and the terrace fire pits are fully lit.”
Claire looked out across the sweeping expanse of the mountain valley below. The autumn wind rustled the leaves of the ancient oaks, carrying the promise of a brilliant, limitless future.

She set her glass down, smoothed the lapels of her jacket, and turned toward the grand entrance of her estate.
“Let’s go welcome our guests,” Claire said."
