Chapter 3 - The Secret Meeting

By seven the following morning, Claire hadn't slept a single minute. She had spent the pre-dawn hours packing Evan’s remaining belongings into black contractor trash bags and stacking them neatly in the garage. He had left at midnight with a solitary suitcase, slamming the door so hard the glass pane rattled.

At 8:15 AM, while sitting at her kitchen island holding a fresh mug of green tea, Claire’s private phone chimed. It was an unrecognized local number.

She hesitated, then swiped open the message.

“Ms. Mercer. My name is Sloane Carter. I know I am the last person on earth you want to hear from, but you need to know the truth about what Evan is doing. He didn’t just lie about his marriage. Please meet me at The Copper Mill at 10:00 AM. Come alone.”

Claire stared at the screen. The Copper Mill was a discreet, high-end coffee shop tucked away in an industrial park four miles south of the city center—far from the corporate crowd and prying eyes.

Every instinct screamed that this was a trap or an unnecessary dive into deeper humiliation. But Sloane’s reaction in the lobby the night before had lingered in Claire's mind. The woman hadn't looked like a triumphant mistress; she had looked sickened, blindsided, and profoundly furious.

At 9:55 AM, Claire pushed open the heavy wooden door of the cafe. The scent of roasted beans and warm pastries filled the air. Sloane was already seated at a low booth in the farthest corner, wearing dark sunglasses and an oversized wool sweater, staring anxiously out the window.

Claire walked over and slid into the leather bench across from her without ordering. Sloane looked up, taking off her sunglasses. Her eyes were red-rimmed and shadowed by dark circles.

“Thank you for coming,” Sloane said, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

“You have five minutes,” Claire said coolly, crossing her legs and clasping her hands over her purse. “I’m not here to exchange war stories about Evan’s romantic prowess. If this is an apology, you can save it.”

“It’s not an apology,” Sloane said, her jaw tightening. “Though for whatever it’s worth, I genuinely believed him when he told me you two had been legally separated since last January. He told me you lived in the guest cottage on the property while the divorce was being finalized. He told me you had already divided your assets.”

“Evan is an exceptional liar,” Claire replied flatly. “Is that what you brought me here to say?”

“No,” Sloane said, leaning forward and pulling a slim manila folder from her designer tote bag. She pushed it across the table toward Claire. “I brought you here because Evan didn’t just deceive you emotionally. He’s running a massive financial scheme, and he’s using both of us as human shields.”

Claire looked down at the folder, then back up at Sloane. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m an independent venture scout,” Sloane explained, her voice gaining an edge of professional authority. “Six months ago, Evan approached my firm representing Apex Horizon Holdings. He presented himself as the managing partner of an investment syndicate looking to acquire distressed commercial properties across North Carolina.”

Claire felt the room spin slightly. Apex Horizon Holdings.

“He convinced me to put down a personal seed investment of three hundred thousand dollars,” Sloane continued, her knuckles turning white against her coffee cup. “He told me his partner—a wealthy corporate executive—had matched it with two hundred thousand. That was your money, wasn't it?”

“A hundred and fifty thousand,” Claire corrected, her heart thumping against her ribs. “He wired it out of our savings last month.”

“It gets worse,” Sloane said, tapping the folder. “Last night, after I left your hotel, I drove straight to my office and called a private investigator friend to run a forensic trace on the Apex banking routing numbers Evan provided. Claire... there are no commercial properties. There is no real estate syndicate.”

Claire opened the folder. Inside were corporate registration filings, wire transfer receipts, and a series of shell company diagrams.

“Apex Horizon is an offshore shell registered in Belize,” Sloane said grimly. “Evan isn't investing our money. He’s laundering it through secondary crypto accounts. And the company’s operating bylaws list you—Claire Vance Mercer—as the majority owner and primary responsible officer.”

Claire stared at the document before her. There, stamped on official corporate letterhead, was her forged signature.

“He’s using your clean credit history, your spotless corporate reputation, and your name to funnel stolen funds,” Sloane whispered. “He’s running a Ponzi scheme with three other regional investors. And when the house of cards collapses, the paper trail leads directly to your desk at the Hawthorne Grand.”
