Chapter 8 - The Delivery at Midnight

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the steady drumming of the rain and Elise’s ragged, agonizing gasps.
Julian lay motionless on the oil-stained floor, a pool of dark blood slowly spreading from his scalp. Nora stood over him, her chest heaving, the steel pipe slipping from her trembling fingers and clattering against the concrete. Her knuckles were bruised, her jacket torn, but her eyes were clear.
""Nora..."" Dominic choked out from the floor, his arms still wrapped protectively around Elise.
Nora didn't look at him. She dropped to her knees beside Elise, immediately peeling off her dry canvas coat and tucking it securely around the younger woman’s shivering shoulders.
""Elise, look at me,"" Nora commanded softly, her hands gentle as she brushed wet strands of blonde hair from the girl's sweat-drenched forehead. ""Look at my eyes. Breathe. In through your nose, out through your mouth.""
""It hurts!"" Elise cried out, her body arching in agony as another violent contraction seized her. ""It's too early... she's only thirty weeks! She's going to die, Nora! She's going to die!""
""Nobody is dying tonight,"" Nora said with fierce certainty. She pressed her palms against Elise’s abdomen, feeling the rock-hard tension of the contraction. ""Molly! Henderson!"" Nora yelled toward the shattered southern entrance.
Headlights flooded the warehouse.
Four unmarked black tactical vans roared through the shattered bay doors, tires screeching across the wet concrete. Dozens of heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear poured out, their assault rifles sweeping the rafters.
""Federal agents! Put your weapons down!"" a voice boomed over a megaphone.
""Over here!"" Dominic yelled, throwing his empty pistol away and raising his hands. ""We have a medical emergency! We need paramedics right now!""
Agent Henderson, a tall, grey-haired veteran with a scarred jawline, sprinted toward them, his tactical vest bearing gold FBI insignia. He took in the scene in an instant: Julian Vance unconscious on the floor, the dead mercenaries scattered across the warehouse, and Nora kneeling over the pregnant woman.
""Nora?"" Henderson asked, his eyes wide with shock. ""Good God, girl. Are you alright?""
""I'm fine, Arthur,"" Nora said, her voice shaking slightly as the adrenaline began to ebb. She reached into her boot, pulled out the pristine SD card, and placed it directly into the agent's palm. ""This has everything. The money laundering ledgers, Julian’s face at the studio shooting, and high-resolution photos of District Attorney Marcus Hayes taking a bribe fifteen minutes ago.""
Henderson looked at the card, then looked at Julian bleeding on the floor. A grim smile crossed his weathered face. ""We already intercepted Hayes trying to flee onto the expressway. Nora, you just brought down the largest criminal network in New England.""
""I don't care about the network, Arthur!"" Nora shouted as Elise let out a blood-curdling scream of labor pain. ""Call the tactical medics! This baby is coming right now!""
Two FBI tactical medics with trauma bags rushed forward, sliding onto their knees beside Nora and Elise.
""Contractions are sixty seconds apart,"" the lead medic said rapidly, checking Elise’s vitals. ""Cervix is fully dilated. There's no time to transport her to Mass General. We have to deliver her here.""
""No, please,"" Elise wept, clutching Nora’s hand with terrifying strength. ""Don't leave me, Nora. Please don't leave me!""
Dominic tried to reach for Elise’s other hand, his face pale with panic. ""Elise, I'm here. Dom is here.""
Elise turned her face away from Dominic, her tear-streaked eyes locking desperately onto Nora. In the darkest, most terrifying moment of her life, she didn't want the man who had lied to her. She wanted the woman who had fought through gunfire to save her life.
""Stay with me,"" Elise begged Nora.
Nora looked down at the young woman who had unwittingly shattered her marriage. There was no hatred left in Nora’s heart for Elise. Only pity, and the shared, unbreakable resilience of two women who had been used as pawns in men's violent games.

Nora gripped Elise’s hand tightly, leaning down close to her ear.
""I'm not going anywhere, Elise,"" Nora whispered gently. ""I'm right here. On three, we push together.""
