Chapter 7 - A Mother's Fury

Nora rolled onto her back just as a heavy combat boot slammed down where her head had been half a second earlier.

A burly guard dressed in black tactical gear lunged for her, reaching for her throat with gloved hands. Nora didn't scream. She didn't freeze. She swung the heavy magnesium-alloy body of her professional camera with both hands, striking the man across the bridge of his nose with brutal, desperate force.

The sound of shattering cartilage echoed above the roar of the rain. The guard roared in agony, stumbling backward against the iron safety railing. Nora scrambled to her feet, kicking him hard in the groin. As he doubled over, she grabbed the tactical sling of his rifle, twisting it around his arm and shoving him with all her weight against the rusted handrail.

The weathered iron bolts gave way with a screech of shearing metal.

The guard plummeted fifty feet to the concrete floor below, landing with a sickening crash across an empty wooden pallet.

Gunfire erupted instantly from the floor.

Rounds chewed through the steel grating around Nora’s boots, throwing up showers of orange sparks. She ducked behind the thick industrial ductwork, keeping her head low as Dominic made his move below.

The moment the guard fell, Dominic drew the concealed Glock from his waistband, firing two rapid shots into the guard holding the shotgun at his knee. The man dropped instantly. Dominic dove behind a stack of steel drums, returning fire toward Julian Vance’s remaining security team.

""Kill them both!"" Julian screamed, ducking behind the folding table as District Attorney Hayes sprinted toward the rear exit like a frightened rat. ""Kill them now!""

On the floor, Elise shrieked as rounds ricocheted off the concrete inches from her chair. The wooden frame tipped over, dumping her onto her side, her bound hands pinned painfully beneath her body.

""Dominic! The west fire escape!"" Nora shouted down from the catwalk, scrambling along the narrow steel beam toward the emergency crane ladder.

She reached the iron ladder and slid down the vertical rails, the friction burning through her leather gloves. She hit the ground behind the heavy machinery, rolling onto her feet just as Dominic eliminated the last perimeter guard with a clean center-mass double tap.

Dominic sprinted across the open concrete, sliding on his knees to Elise’s side. He whipped out a tactical blade, slicing through the zip-ties binding her wrists and ankles.

""Get up, Elise! Get up!"" Dominic urged, lifting her by her shoulders.

Elise was sobbing, clutching her abdomen, her face ashen. ""Dom... the baby... something's wrong. I feel... oh God, the water broke.""

Dominic froze, staring at her in sheer horror. ""Now? Not now, please God, not now...""

A shadow loomed at the edge of the light.

Julian Vance stepped out from behind a steel cargo container. He had discarded his cashmere coat. In his right hand, he held a sleek submachine gun, aimed directly at Elise’s chest. His face was twisted into a grotesque sneer of hatred.

""How touching,"" Julian hissed, stepping forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""The happy family reunited just in time for the burial.""

Dominic threw his body completely over Elise, shielding her and the unborn child with his own back, his empty pistol raised uselessly in his hand.

""Shoot me, Julian!"" Dominic screamed. ""Let her walk! Take me!""

""Oh, I'll take you both, Dominic,"" Julian sneered, raising the barrel. ""Starting with the bastard child.""

FLASH.

A blinding burst of five thousand lumens exploded directly into Julian’s retinas from ten feet away.

Nora had stepped out from behind the heavy forklift, holding her high-powered studio strobe pack connected to a handheld flash diffuser. The sudden, overwhelming wall of light in the pitch-black warehouse burned Julian’s night-adjusted vision to complete white.

Julian shrieked in shock, firing blindly into the air, the automatic rounds chewing harmlessly through the warehouse ceiling.

Before he could recover his sight, Nora stepped forward, swinging a three-foot steel scaffolding pipe with every ounce of fury, betrayal, and heartbreak that had built up inside her soul for eleven years.

The pipe struck Julian Vance squarely across the side of his skull.

The billionaire crumpled to the concrete floor like a sack of wet cement, his weapon clattering into the darkness, completely unconscious.
