Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Dark

The rain began just after nine o’clock, a relentless, freezing November downpour that turned the gravel access roads around the South Boston industrial waterfront into slick ribbons of black mud.
Nora sat in the passenger seat of Dominic’s unmarked black sedan, parked behind a rusted corrugated steel shipping container three hundred yards from Pier 49. The rhythmic thump of the windshield wipers was the only sound breaking the heavy silence between them.
Dominic was loading brass hollow-point rounds into a pair of spare magazines, his fingers moving with practiced, rhythmic speed.
""You don't have to walk in there with me,"" Dominic said quietly, not looking up from his task. ""Give me the camera and the card. I will go in alone. I'll get Elise out.""
""You go in alone, and Julian shoots you the second you hand over the drive,"" Nora said without hesitation. She was wearing dark jeans, a thick wool turtleneck, and a dark canvas coat. In her lap lay a backup camera body fitted with a high-aperture 70-200mm telephoto lens, capable of capturing crisp images in near-total darkness. ""Julian’s ego is his biggest weakness. He wants an audience. He wants to see me break. He wants to watch you grovel in front of your wife and your mistress before he cleans the slate.""
Dominic clicked the second magazine into the grip of his pistol. He looked at her, his jaw tight. ""I destroyed us, didn't I?""
Nora turned her head, looking out at the dark waters of the harbor churning against the wooden pylons. ""You didn't destroy us today, Dominic. You destroyed us the day you decided that lying to me was easier than trusting me. You thought you were keeping me safe by keeping me small. You thought if you treated me like a child who couldn't handle your reality, you could keep your hands clean.""
""I was terrified of losing you,"" he whispered.
""You already lost me,"" she said, her voice steady and absolute. ""The moment this night is over, and that girl and her baby are safe, you and I are done. I want the divorce papers signed within forty-eight hours. You will surrender every claim to my studio, you will take your name off the townhouse lease, and you will never contact me again.""
Dominic swallowed hard, a muscle feathering in his cheek. He nodded once, the pain in his eyes raw and agonizing. ""Agreed. Whatever you want, Nora. Just survive tonight.""
Nora reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. An encrypted messaging app pinged.
""Molly reached Agent Henderson at the Boston FBI field office,"" Nora said, showing him the screen. ""Henderson has been building a racketeering case against Julian Vance’s holding company for eighteen months. But they couldn't move because Vance had a mole inside the United States Attorney’s office who tipped him off every time a warrant was drafted.""
""That's why I couldn't go to the feds,"" Dominic said, his eyes widening. ""Henderson is clean?""
""Henderson was my father’s best friend before he died, Dominic,"" Nora replied, a faint, cold smile touching her lips. ""You think you're the only one in this city with connections? My father worked thirty years in the state organized crime division. Henderson doesn't answer to the Boston DA. He answers directly to the Department of Justice in Washington. His tactical team is staging at the reserve depot two miles north right now.""
Dominic stared at his wife as if looking at a stranger—a brilliant, formidable strategist he had grossly underestimated for over a decade.
""What's the play?"" Dominic asked, his tone shifting entirely from patronizing protector to an equal partner in combat.
""Julian expects us to deliver the camera and the decryption drive in exchange for Elise,"" Nora explained, pointing toward the elevated catwalks visible through the rain-streaked windshield. ""The warehouse has an industrial skylight array along the western roof. I'm not walking through the front door with you, Dominic. You're going to walk in alone, draw his security perimeter toward the center floor, and keep Julian talking.""
""And where will you be?""
Nora tapped the telephoto lens on her lap. ""I'm going through the roof ladder. I'm going to document every single person in that room, the transfer of the hostages, and Julian’s weapons. The moment Julian confirms on tape that he ordered the hit on Marlborough Street, Henderson’s federal strike team breaches the perimeter.""
May you like
""It's too dangerous, Nora,"" Dominic urged, his voice tightening. ""If one of his sentries spots you on that catwalk—""
""Then you better make sure you're talking loud enough to keep their eyes on you,"" Nora said, opening the passenger door into the biting rain. ""Let's go finish this.""
