Chapter 4 - The Handcuffs Arrive

The heavy mahogany double doors of the country club ballroom swung open with a deafening bang. Instead of late-arriving guests, four uniformed Massachusetts State Police officers marched into the room, followed closely by two men wearing dark suits and gold federal badges.

The ballroom fell dead silent once more. The lead federal agent, an imposing man with graying hair and an iron jaw, held up an active arrest warrant stamped by the United States District Court.

"Preston Hargrove?" the federal agent asked, his voice cutting through the remaining whispers.

Preston scrambled backward, knocking over a champagne tower. Crystal flutes shattered across the floor, drenching his bespoke trousers in vintage wine and broken glass. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I am the CEO of Hargrove Enterprises!"

"You were the CEO," the agent replied coldly. "As of two hours ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with the Department of Justice, froze every asset associated with your domestic and foreign shell companies. You are under arrest for interstate wire fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."

Two state troopers moved in with practiced efficiency. Before Preston could crawl away through the puddle of champagne, they grabbed his arms, hauled him to his feet, and twisted his wrists behind his back.

The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the vast ballroom.

"Audrey, do something!" Preston shrieked, his voice dissolving into pathetic, high-pitched begging. "Tell them this is a mistake! You’re my wife! Everything I own is half yours! If I go down, you lose everything too!"

I walked up to him, stopping just inches from his sweat-slicked, frantic face. I reached down into the puddle of champagne, picked up the thick envelope containing his divorce demand, and slapped it lightly against his chest.

"You told me to sign and leave, Preston," I whispered, loud enough for every guest and officer to hear. "I’m not leaving. But you certainly are."

The agents turned to Sabrina next. Another officer stepped forward, producing a separate set of cuffs. "Sabrina Lowell, you are being detained as an accessory to corporate espionage and interstate financial conspiracy."

Sabrina screamed, thrashing against the officer's grip as her designer dress ripped at the shoulder. "Call Marcus! Tell Marcus to get his lawyers down here right now!"

"Mr. Sterling was arrested forty minutes ago at Logan International Airport trying to board a private jet to the Bahamas," the federal investigator replied with a dry, merciless smirk. "He won't be taking your calls."

As the officers hauled Preston and Sabrina out through the ballroom doors, our ten-year-old daughter stood at the edge of the stage, breathing calmly and evenly. She didn't cry. She didn't celebrate. She simply held my hand, knowing that our nightmare was finally over.
