Chapter 1 - The Silver Flash Drive

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the crystal pendants on the chandeliers clinking together. Preston’s hand hung frozen in mid-air, still grasping the thick white envelope with the divorce petition. His smug expression dissolved into pure, raw terror the second his eyes locked onto the metallic flash drive in our daughter’s hand.
Willa didn’t flinch. She had suffered through hospitalizations, oxygen tubes, and years of Eleanor’s cold neglect, but right now, she was the strongest person in that room. Her pale knuckles gripped the drive as if it were a weapon forged just for this moment.
"Willa, sit down right now," Preston barked, his voice losing every trace of its polished, high-society charm. A harsh squeak cracked through his throat, exposing the panic clawing beneath his navy suit. "This is adult business. Go back to your seat with your grandparents."
Sabrina pulled the three-year-old boy closer against her designer gown. Her rehearsed, triumphant smile faltered as she glanced nervously between Preston and the child. The little boy started whimpering, confused by the sudden suffocating chill that had settled over the entire room.
Eleanor stepped forward, her silk shawl slipping from her bony shoulders. Her voice was shrill with indignation as she glared at Willa. "Audrey, control your child! How dare she interrupt this family milestone with a childish temper tantrum?"
I didn't back down. For eleven agonizing years, I had swallowed my pride to keep Eleanor happy, but seeing her brush aside my flesh and blood for an adulterous affair broke every chain holding me back. I walked straight past Preston and positioned myself directly beside my daughter, resting my hand firmly on her trembling shoulder.
"She has something to say, Eleanor," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the frozen banquet tables. "And since you and your son love making public spectacles, we’re all going to listen."
Willa turned on her heel and marched directly toward the stage where the audiovisual team was running the anniversary slideshow. The sound technician, a young man who looked horrified by the unfolding domestic war, instinctively stepped back from his laptop.
"No! Security, stop her!" Preston yelled, lunging forward with his arms outstretched.
My father, a retired blue-collar machinist with hands like stone, stepped smoothly into Preston’s path. He didn't raise a fist; he simply set a heavy hand on Preston’s chest, anchoring him firmly in place. "You've said your piece, son. Let the girl speak."
Willa slid the USB drive into the console port. The massive projector screens flanking the stage flickered once, twice, and then snapped to life with high-definition clarity.
The room gasped in unison. It wasn't a school project or a home video of Willa's birthdays. The screen displayed a folder titled HARGROVE LOGISTICS & BIOTECH — EMBEZZLEMENT AND OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS.
Preston’s knees visibly buckled. His mistress gasped and took two quick steps away from him, realizing that the golden trap she had walked into was about to snap shut.

Underneath the primary folder lay a series of date-stamped audio files, court records, and a legal DNA registry report stamped by Boston Forensics Laboratory. Willa pressed the spacebar, and the high-end ballroom speakers hummed with incoming audio.
"You thought I was just playing games on your study computer," Willa said into the podium microphone, her small voice steady and piercing. "You forgot that you taught me how to recover deleted server partitions last summer, Dad."
