Chapter 8 - The Price of Arrogance

Two weeks after the final decree was signed, Emma returned to the Oak Park house for the final time. The moving truck was idling at the curb, its cargo bay packed with her remaining furniture and personal belongings. She had sold the house to an eager young family with two golden retrievers who were thrilled to turn the manicured backyard into a playground.

As Emma walked down the front path to hand the keys to her real estate agent, an old, dented sedan pulled up across the street.

Nathan stepped out. He was wearing faded jeans and a wrinkled jacket, holding an envelope in his hand. He looked gaunt, the swagger that had once defined his every movement completely eradicated.

""Emma,"" he called out, his voice hesitant, almost timid.

Emma paused near the mailbox, her real estate agent stepping back politely to give them space. ""Nathan. You shouldn't be here. The restraining order regarding property access is clear.""

""I know. I’m not here to cause trouble,"" he said, holding his hands up defensively. He stopped six feet away—the exact distance Emma had stood from him when she overheard his conversation with his friends. ""I just... I brought the signed quitclaim deed for the lake property. My lawyer said you needed it finalized.""

""Leave it on the porch,"" Emma said, not reaching out to take it.

Nathan looked at the house behind her, then down at his scuffed shoes. ""I lost the firm, Emma. The partners bought me out for pennies on the dollar to settle the compliance fines. I’m working as a floor manager at a regional auto dealership in Schaumburg.""

""I know,"" Emma replied softly.

""Madison won't even return my calls. She threatened to file harassment charges if I drove past her building."" Nathan let out a dry, cracked laugh. ""She didn't care about me at all. Not for a single second. It was all about what I could pay for.""

""I could have told you that eight months ago, Nathan.""

Nathan looked up at her, tears welling in the corners of his tired eyes. ""You were the only one who ever actually loved me, wasn't you? You took care of everything. You protected me from my own stupidity for seventeen years, and I was too arrogant to see it. I threw away an angel because I wanted a trophy.""

Emma looked at him, feeling no anger, no hatred, and surprisingly, no lingering pain. She looked at him the way one looks at a stranger on a subway platform—someone whose life and choices no longer had any bearing on her own destiny.

""I wasn't an angel, Nathan,"" Emma said with gentle authority. ""I was your wife. I was your partner. But you treated me like a convenience, an unpaid assistant who existed to make your life effortless while you looked for excitement elsewhere. You didn't lose me because of Madison. You lost me because you forgot to respect the woman who built your life with you.""

Nathan wiped a tear from his cheek with the back of his hand, his lip trembling. ""Is there any chance? In a year? In five years? After I fix myself?""

May you like

""No, Nathan,"" Emma said simply. ""The chapter is closed. Take care of yourself.""

She turned, walked down the concrete walkway to her car, and drove away into the bright afternoon sun, leaving Nathan standing alone on the sidewalk of the street he could no longer call home.
