Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

By Tuesday afternoon, Nathan Caldwell’s carefully curated world was collapsing like a house of cards in a gale. His business partner, having reviewed the forensic accounting documents Emma provided, immediately initiated an emergency buyout clause, removing Nathan from all executive decisions to protect the company from legal liability.

Without access to the joint accounts or the frozen credit lines, Nathan’s cards were declined everywhere he went. When he arrived at Madison’s luxury apartment at The Sterling Oaks seeking solace, he was met with a cold reception.

Madison stood in the doorway, blocking his entrance, her arms folded across her chest. ""Why did my bank contact me about a fraudulent wire transfer, Nathan?""

Nathan pushed past her, his hair disheveled and his tie askew. ""It’s a temporary snag. Emma found out, and she’s being vindictive. She froze the accounts, but my lawyer is filing a motion to dismiss tomorrow morning. We just need to sit tight.""

""Sit tight?"" Madison’s voice lacked the playful sweetness she had displayed over champagne at the bistro. ""Nathan, the rent on this unit is due in forty-eight hours. The retainer for my public relations contract was reversed by the bank this morning. The bank told me the check you gave me was drawn on an account currently under investigation for corporate embezzlement.""

""It’s not embezzlement! It was my money!""

""It was your wife’s corporate account!"" Madison shot back, her eyes flashing with cold disgust. ""You told me you were an independent managing partner! You told me you owned the investment portfolio outright! You’re nothing but an employee who got caught with his hand in his wife’s company safe!""

""Madison, look at me,"" Nathan pleaded, reaching for her arm. ""We have a future together. I gave you everything you asked for.""

""You gave me stolen checks that bounced,"" she said, stepping back into her apartment and pushing the door shut between them. ""Don't come back here, Nathan. If your wife’s investigators contact me again, I’m giving them every text, every receipt, and every email you ever sent me to keep myself out of prison.""

The heavy fire door clicked shut, leaving Nathan standing in the carpeted hallway of the luxury building he could no longer afford, with empty pockets and nowhere to turn.

He walked down to the parking garage, his hands shaking as he started his car. For the first time in seventeen years, there was no warm dinner waiting for him, no clean shirts hanging in his closet, no quiet, competent woman managing the chaos of his life behind the scenes. There was only the cold, unforgiving reality of his own making.
