Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail Beneath the Mattress

The guest bedroom at Margaret Bennett’s condo was small, smelling faintly of lavender sachet and old paperbacks, but to Emma, it felt safer than the four-bedroom suburban fortress she had left behind. Her mother, Margaret, was propped up in bed watching an old black-and-white movie when Emma walked in with two heavy binders under her arm.

""He didn't notice,"" Margaret said softly, lowering her reading glasses. A mother’s intuition rarely required a preamble.

""He bragged about her while I was carrying a tray of appetizers into the room,"" Emma answered, sitting at the small laminate desk in the corner. ""He thought I was too busy rearranging toothpicks to understand what betrayal sounded like.""

Margaret looked at her daughter for a long moment, then reached out and squeezed her hand. ""You built that house, Emma. Don't you dare let him convince you that you were just a resident.""

Emma spent the night under the harsh glow of her laptop screen. By 2:00 AM, she had logged into their shared bank accounts, personal credit cards, and the business line of credit Nathan had opened two years prior for his commercial consulting agency. What she found turned her stomach far worse than Nathan’s bragging.

There were charges from the Palmer House in Chicago during a weekend Nathan claimed he was attending an emergency regional leadership conference. Charges for fine dining at high-end steakhouses, boutique jewelry stores, and a recurring monthly charge to a boutique apartment complex on the north side of town called The Sterling Oaks.

Emma pulled up the secretary of state’s business registry. Madison Vance. That was the name Peter had dropped in the driveway when Emma called him thirty minutes after leaving the house. Madison Vance ran a small boutique branding agency, but when Emma cross-referenced the corporate filings, Nathan’s consulting LLC was listed as the primary guarantor on the lease for Madison’s luxury loft.

He hadn't just taken a mistress; he was financing her lifestyle with marital assets.

""Seventeen years,"" Emma whispered into the dim room, her fingers hovering over the trackpad. She felt a profound wave of disgust, but right behind it came a cold, surgical focus. Nathan had always viewed her as dependable, predictable, and quiet. He assumed she would cry, threaten to leave, accept a tearful apology, and spend the next two years trying to rebuild his fragile ego in marriage counseling.

He had forgotten who ran the logistics.

At 7:00 AM, Emma’s phone rang. It was Peter Lawson.

""Emma,"" Peter said, his voice thick with guilt. ""I couldn't sleep. Look, I didn't tell you earlier because Nathan swore it was over back in August. But he’s been lying to everyone. He took out an equity draw on your home equity line of credit last month. He told us he was investing in a commercial warehouse project. But I saw the paperwork on his desk when we were watching the game last week. It was an escrow deposit for an equity buyout of Madison’s creative agency.""

Emma jotted down the dates. ""Did you see the bank account number, Peter?""

""No, but he’s meeting her today at 1:00 PM at the Bistro Montparnasse. He thinks you’re going to spend the weekend cooling off at your mom’s. He told Ryan this morning that you’d be back by Sunday evening folding his shirts.""

Emma smiled a thin, humorless smile. ""Thank you, Peter. You did the right thing last night.""

""Emma? What are you going to do?""

""I’m going to make sure he gets exactly what he paid for.""
