Chapter 3 - Champagne, Silk, and Silent Witnesses

Bistro Montparnasse was the kind of restaurant where mid-level executives went to pretend they were European aristocrats. It featured heavy velvet drapes, low amber lighting, and white tablecloths thick enough to muffle the sound of silver cutlery.
Emma arrived twenty minutes early. She wore a tailored charcoal wool coat, dark designer sunglasses, and her hair swept into an elegant chignon she rarely had time to style during her routine workdays. She chose a booth situated behind a large decorative ficus tree, giving her an unobstructed view of the corner banquette Nathan always reserved when he wanted to feel important.
At 1:05 PM, Nathan walked in. He looked refreshed, smelling of expensive sandalwood cologne, carrying a leather portfolio under his arm. Three minutes later, Madison Vance arrived.
She was undeniably striking, with glossy dark hair falling past her shoulders, dressed in a sleek camel-colored trench coat and heels that clicked with loud self-assurance across the polished hardwood floor. She slid into the booth opposite Nathan, leaning across the table to brush her lips against his cheek.
Nathan smiled that broad, conquering smile he used whenever he secured a major contract. He reached into his portfolio and handed her a thick manila envelope. Madison opened the clasp, pulled out a stack of cashier's checks, and beamed, tucking them directly into her designer purse.
Emma didn't pull out a phone to cause a scene. Instead, she turned to the woman sitting opposite her in her booth: Evelyn Cross, one of the most ruthless forensic accountants and divorce attorneys in the state, whom Emma had retained at 8:30 that morning through a high-profile corporate contact.
""Did you get the photo of the transfer document?"" Evelyn asked quietly, adjusting her glasses.
""Every line,"" Emma murmured, sliding her phone across the table. The digital camera on Emma’s telephoto lens had clearly captured the account numbers stamped across the bank drafts. ""That money came from our joint retirement reserve account. He forged my digital signature using my office email portal, which he still had access to on his iPad.""
Evelyn reviewed the images, her eyes narrowing behind designer frames. ""That isn't just dissipation of marital assets, Emma. That’s interstate wire fraud and document forgery. He used your login credentials while you were listed as an active caregiver for an immediate dependent. The courts in this county will tear him apart.""
""I don't just want him torn apart in court, Evelyn,"" Emma said quietly, her voice calm and measured. ""I want him to understand that every single luxury he handed that woman was bought with my labor. I want every penny accounted for, returned, and put where it belongs.""

""Then we wait until Monday morning,"" Evelyn replied with a cold grin. ""Let him spend his weekend celebrating his cleverness. By the time he realizes the trap has closed, the door will already be bolted.""
Across the dining room, Nathan raised a champagne flute, toasting Madison with an arrogant tilt of his head. Emma watched him drink, feeling no heartbreak, no jealousy, and no lingering grief. The man she had loved for seventeen years had died the moment he told his friends she wouldn't notice a knife in her back because she was too busy rearranging toothpicks.
