Chapter 7 - Midnight At 31st Street

Leaving Marco secured in the vault, I ascended to the mansion’s command center on the third floor. Outside, the rain had turned into a slashing sleet, glazing the driveway and trees in a brittle coat of ice. Through the thermal imaging monitors, I watched the perimeter security teams take their defensive positions behind the stone boundary walls. Every guard was armed with suppressed carbines and night-vision gear.
Emma was waiting in the hallway outside the security room, pacing back and forth, her fingers twisted tightly into her cardigan. Sophie was asleep on a nearby leather sofa, wrapped in a plush wool blanket, her plastic magnifying glass still gripped loosely in her small hand.
"Mr. Romano," Emma whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she heard the distant whine of sirens echoing from several miles away toward the industrial district. "Is it over?"
I walked over to her, placing a gentle hand on her trembling shoulder. "The hard part is happening right now, Emma. But the danger to you and Sophie ends tonight. I gave Marco to the federal authorities, and right now, the FBI is closing in on Julian Thorne."
Down at the 31st Street rail yard, the battle was already unfolding. Through an intercepted tactical police scanner on my desk, the chaos came through in rapid, crackling bursts:
"All units, breach perimeter! Suspects are heavily armed! Repeat, suspects are returning fire from the central warehouse!"
"Flashbangs deployed! North entrance secured!"
"Target Thorne is attempting to flee via the secondary loading dock! Intercept! Intercept!"
Julian Thorne had built his criminal empire on intimidation, bribery, and the belief that he was entirely untouchable. He had never faced the full, unbridled might of a federal inter-agency tactical raid. Deprived of the element of surprise, his mercenary strike team was completely surrounded within minutes. Trapped between armored SWAT BearCats and tactical federal snipers positioned on the adjacent grain silos, Thorne’s men realized within five minutes of sustained rifle fire that their escape routes were completely severed.
"Cease fire! Cease fire! Target Thorne is on the ground! He is in custody! Secure the perimeter!"
A heavy, profound silence fell over my command center as the radio crackled and died.

Julian Thorne was in chains. The sixty-man strike force that was supposed to storm my home, burn my life to the ground, and slaughter Emma and Sophie had been neutralized before they could even load their magazines into their weapons.
I let out a long, ragged exhale that felt like it had been trapped in my lungs for a quarter of a century. The empire was safe. But the emotional carnage left in the wake of Marco's betrayal felt heavier than any financial loss I could have ever suffered.
