Chapter 4 - The Cellar Of Reckoning

The descent into the lower reaches of my estate felt like walking into a catacomb. The temperature dropped steadily as we passed through the wine cellar, our shoes clicking rhythmically against the antique cobblestone floor. Marco walked beside me, his hands thrust into his coat pockets. His casual demeanor had begun to fray around the edges; his eyes darted to the dark corners, the heavy cast-iron sconces, and the thick vaulted doorways. He was a predator accustomed to hunting from the tall grass; being led into an enclosed subterranean chamber set off every survival alarm in his nervous system.

We reached the heavy reinforced steel door of the archive vault. I entered an eight-digit sequence into the digital keypad, followed by a retinal scan. The hydraulic locks disengaged with a sharp, pneumatic hiss. The heavy door swung open, revealing a brightly lit, rectangular room encased in three feet of solid concrete. There were no windows, no secondary exits, and no cellular reception. In the center of the room sat a single steel table, two folding chairs, and an industrial laptop resting beside a crystal tumbler of Macallan 25.

Marco stepped inside, looking around with a forced grin. "A bit theatrical for a USB drive, isn't it, Dante?"

"Security is an art form, Marco," I said, stepping in behind him and letting the steel door swing shut. The heavy bolts automatically slammed back into their housings with a definitive, mechanical thud that reverberated through the stone walls.

Marco spun around instantly. The smile vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. "Why did you lock the door?"

"Because what we need to discuss isn't suitable for polite company," I said, walking unhurriedly around the steel table. I pulled out a chair and sat down, gesturing toward the seat opposite me. "Sit down, Marco. Have a drink."

Marco didn't move. His hand slid toward his left armpit, where I knew he carried an unregistered snub-nosed revolver. "I don't like games, Dante. Unlock the vault. We have a transfer to execute upstairs."

"You mean the transfer Julian Thorne is currently waiting to intercept?" I asked quietly.

The name hit him like a physical blow. Marco froze, his hand remaining tucked inside his overcoat. For three seconds, neither of us breathed. The low hum of the fluorescent lights filled the silence.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Marco spat, though a faint twitch beneath his left eye betrayed him. "Who's been poisoning your ear? Was it the board? Was it that useless driver?"

"It was a five-year-old girl holding a plastic magnifying glass," I said calmly. "And a mother who was tired of being threatened with child protection services."

Marco’s face drained of color. He let out a low, bitter laugh, shaking his head as his hand slowly emerged from his coat—empty. He pulled out the folding chair, dragged it across the concrete with a screech, and dropped into it. The facade of the loyal brother was completely stripped away, revealing the bitter, venomous soul beneath.

"A housekeeper's kid," Marco whispered, running both hands over his slick hair. "Twenty-five years of building an empire, and I get undone by a toddler playing detective. Poetic, Dante. Truly poetic."

"Why, Marco?" My voice cracked slightly, the pain finally cutting through my professional stoicism. "I gave you a quarter of everything. You had wealth, power, respect. You were the only man on earth who had my absolute trust. Why sell out to Julian Thorne?"

"Because I was always your second!" Marco snarled, slamming his fist onto the steel table with enough force to rattle the crystal glass. "Every room we walked into, it was Dante Romano and his associate! Dante Romano, the brilliant strategist, and Marco Bellini, the attack dog! I took a blade for you in that alley, Dante! That scar burns every time it rains! You thought giving me twenty-five percent was charity? It was an insult! I built half of this empire with my bare hands, and I was done begging for scraps from your golden table!"
