Chapter 1 - The Whispers Behind The Velvet Drapes

The silence in my office was deafening after Emma swept Sophie into her arms and slipped down the corridor. My chest felt hollow, a vacuum where twenty-five years of unquestioning loyalty used to reside. Marco Bellini was not just a partner in my logistics and private security firm; he was my brother in everything but blood. When we were nineteen, dodging stray rounds in the neglected alleyways of South Chicago, Marco pulled me behind a dumpster and took a serrated blade across his forearm meant for my throat. I carried that scar in my conscience every single day. I gave him twenty-five percent of Romano Enterprises, unfettered access to my private bank accounts, and the security codes to every vault and server room I owned.

Now, crouching on the imported Italian hardwood beneath my heavy mahogany desk, my fingers trembled. I ran my fingertips along the underside of the central drawer. For three inches, there was only smooth, polished wood. Then my nail caught on something rigid. A cold sweat broke across the back of my neck. Tucked inside the seam of the kneehole, disguised as an ordinary brass wood-screw, sat a matte-black micro-transceiver. It had a pinhole microphone and a military-grade local beacon. It was powered by a microscopic lithium-ion button cell—the exact diameter of the bezel on Marco’s custom Rolex Submariner.

I didn't pull it off. In this business, once you discover a leak, you don't plug it immediately; you control what flows through it. If Marco knew I had found his bug, whatever trap he had laid would spring before I could arm myself. My mind raced backward through the past three months. The sudden cancellation of our maritime shipping contracts in Greece. The federal audits targeting Romano Holdings out of nowhere. The eerie precision with which our primary rival, Julian Thorne, had underbid our municipal security contracts by mere hundreds of dollars. I had thought we were dealing with an elite hacker or an insider in our finance division. Marco had sat right across from me with a glass of bourbon, shaking his head, swearing on his mother’s grave that he would hunt down the traitor and break their hands.

I stood up, smoothed my suit, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling bay window overlooking Lake Michigan. Outside, winter rain lashed against the reinforced glass. Emma Carter’s reaction when Sophie mentioned the bad man wasn't just shock. Her knuckles had turned bone-white, and her jaw had locked in primal terror. Emma had worked for me for barely six months, an unassuming widow who kept her head down, scrubbed marble floors until they mirrored the chandelier light, and doted on her bright-eyed daughter. Why would a humble domestic worker recognize Marco’s clandestine behavior? What had she seen in these quiet halls while I was running an empire?

My private phone buzzed against my thigh. The caller ID flashed Marco’s name. For the first time in twenty-five years, seeing that name made my pulse spike with adrenaline rather than relief. I took a slow, measured breath, forcing my vocal cords into their customary relaxed rumble.

"Hey, brother," Marco’s voice boomed through the speaker, brimming with charismatic warmth. "I just left the North River facility. The perimeter sensors are back online. Listen, Dante, we need to go over the offshore accounts before the federal compliance review tomorrow morning. Are you still at the downtown mansion?"

May you like

"Yeah, Marco," I replied smoothly, looking down at the microphone hidden beneath my desk. "I’m in the study right now. Going over the final ledger files."

"Perfect. Don’t leave. I’m ten minutes out. Let's finish this together, like always."
