Chapter 5 - The Emergency Meeting

At 8:30 the following morning, the executive boardroom at Pierce Wealth Management was engulfed in high-stakes chaos.

Arthur Pierce, the founding managing partner and Lauren’s uncle, sat at the head of the conference table, furiously slamming his fountain pen onto a stack of legal memos.

Lauren sat three seats down, her face pale, hiding behind dark sunglasses and layers of foundation that couldn't conceal the exhaustion beneath her eyes.

"Explain this to me again, Lauren," Arthur barked, his voice echoing off the frosted glass partitions.

"At six o'clock yesterday, we were forty-eight hours away from signing Ethan Bennett’s venture capital portfolio—the biggest client acquisition in this firm’s twenty-year history."

Lauren swallowed hard, her throat clicking nervously.

"Uncle Arthur, it was a total misunderstanding—"

"A misunderstanding?!" Arthur exploded, standing up and throwing a tablet onto the center of the table.

"Bennett Capital called our legal division at midnight! Not only did Ethan Bennett pull his investment portfolio, but the commercial building trust that owns our office lease issued a twenty-four-hour notice of non-renewal for material lease violations!"

The six other senior partners around the table gasped in horror.

"Non-renewal?!" one partner stammered. "Our lease has five years remaining! Relocating this firm would cost three million dollars and shatter client confidence!"

"The building trust is managed by an independent entity called Lumière Holdings," Arthur snarled, glaring daggers at his niece.

"And according to Bennett's legal counsel, the chairwoman of Lumière Holdings is a woman named Maya Bennett. Does that name ring a bell, Lauren?!"

Lauren gripped the edge of the conference table until her knuckles turned snow-white.

"Maya... she owns the building?"

"She bought the building two years ago through an institutional shell company!" Arthur yelled, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson.

"What in God's name did you do to that woman at dinner last night?!"

Before Lauren could utter another lie, the heavy frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

My chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, walked in wearing an impeccable charcoal suit, holding a leather folio and an encrypted tablet.

Behind him, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and tailored slacks, walked me.
