Chapter 1 - The Finger That Froze The Room

Ethan's finger remained pointed directly at my chest, his silver wedding band gleaming under the chandelier.
Lauren followed the direction of his hand, her polished smile stretching thin and brittle as an uneasy silence settled over Table Four.
"Mr. Bennett?" Lauren offered a nervous giggle, trying to smooth the tense air with practiced corporate charm.
"Is something wrong? If the waitress is distracting you, I can ask the manager to replace her immediately."
Ethan slowly lowered his hand, his jaw tightening into a line of carved granite.
He didn't look at Lauren. His eyes stayed glued to the dark crimson stain soaking through the cotton of my blouse.
"Lauren," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm register.
"Why is my wife covered in Cabernet Sauvignon?"
The words didn't merely drop into the air; they detonated like an acoustic bomb across the dining room.
Lauren’s eyes widened so fast I thought her false lashes would snap off.
Her mouth opened, closed, and opened again, but not a single syllable came out.
"W-wife?" she finally squeaked, her voice climbing an octave higher than normal.
"You must be mistaken, Mr. Bennett. This is Maya Vance. We went to Oakridge High together. She... she's carrying water pitchers."
Ethan took two measured steps forward, completely ignoring Lauren's outstretched hand and portfolio folder.
He reached into his tailored suit pocket, pulled out a silk handkerchief, and gently dabbed at the soaked fabric above my collarbone.
"You okay, sweetheart?" he whispered, his eyes softening with fierce tenderness.
"I'm fine, Ethan," I murmured back, catching his wrist so he wouldn't stain his own cuff.
"Just a little flashback to senior year cafeteria drama."
Ethan's thumb brushed against my cheek before he turned to face Lauren Pierce once again.
The warmth in his expression vanished instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp coldness that had made him one of the most feared tech venture capitalists in the country.
"Miss Pierce," Ethan said with icy precision, crossing his arms.

"My wife doesn't work for tips. She owns this entire establishment. In fact, she owns the commercial real estate company that leases your firm’s regional headquarters on Michigan Avenue."
Lauren staggered back half an inch, her heel catching on the carpet as all the blood drained from her face.
