Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Pier 42

Three weeks passed in a blur of audits, late-night strategy sessions, and swift corporate decapitations. Working together, Gabriel and I systematically dismantled Luke's network. With the financial proof I uncovered in the Delaware shell company ledgers, we froze three of Callahan’s offshore accounts and cancelled the lease agreements on the North Side docks.

Luke was drowning. Cut off from Moretti funds and pressured by Senator Callahan to deliver results, he had become erratic, dangerous, and desperate.

On a rainy Thursday night, Gabriel received an urgent call on his secure satellite line. Mateo spoke quickly from the other end: ""Boss, there's a problem at Pier 42. A shipment marked as medical equipment from Callahan Logistics arrived without customs clearance. Luke is at the warehouse right now with six armed men trying to move the crates off the manifest before morning inspection.""

Gabriel stood up, grabbing his coat. ""Wake the tactical team. I'm on my way.""

""I'm coming with you,"" I said, springing up from the library sofa where I had been cross-referencing cargo numbers.

""Absolutely not,"" Gabriel replied, checking the magazine of a matte-black semi-automatic pistol before tucking it beneath his jacket. ""It’s raining, it’s cold, and Luke is cornered. Cornered animals do stupid things.""

""The shipping manifests are digital, Gabriel! They require my two-factor administrator key to freeze the customs upload on-site. If you just shoot them, Callahan can claim police overreach and seize the docks under municipal emergency powers. You need the digital audit completed while Luke is physically caught in possession!""

Gabriel cursed under his breath, looking from the laptop in my hands to my determined expression. He knew I was right. ""Stay behind me. If I tell you to run, you don't argue, you don't look back. You run. Understood?""

""Understood.""

Twenty minutes later, Gabriel’s armored SUV pulled into the shadows of Pier 42. Rain lashed against the windshield as the rusted metal doors of the old shipping warehouse creaked in the wind. Inside, bright halogen work lamps illuminated four massive wooden shipping crates surrounded by two black SUVs.

Luke stood near an open crate, screaming into his phone while his hired private security loaded heavy black duffel bags into the trunks.

Gabriel kicked open the side pedestrian door, his heavy boots echoing like thunder inside the cavernous space. I stepped in right behind him, keeping low, clutching the encrypted tablet to my chest.

""Shut it down, Luke,"" Gabriel’s voice boomed over the patter of rain against the corrugated metal roof.

Luke dropped his phone, whipping around. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie undone, looking like a man who hadn't slept in a week. The four armed guards around him immediately reached for their waistbands.

""Don't even twitch,"" Gabriel warned, raising his pistol with terrifying calm, his aim rock steady despite leaning his weight onto his left leg. ""My men have already surrounded the perimeter. The harbor police are five minutes out. Drop your weapons.""

""You ruined me!"" Luke screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. ""Callahan dropped me! Isabella broke the engagement this morning! She called me an incompetent clown! My own fiancée!""

""She wasn't your fiancée, Luke,"" I called out from behind Gabriel’s shoulder. ""She was your handler. Look inside those crates, you idiot! What did you think you were smuggling? Designer watches?""

Luke frowned, turning toward the open crate. Gabriel took two steady steps forward, his eyes never leaving the guards. ""Claire, pull the customs lock now.""

I tapped the screen, transmitting the encrypted override. Overhead, the warehouse's automated alarm system blared to life, bathed in flashing red emergency lights.

Suddenly, Luke's lead bodyguard—a cold-eyed mercenary who clearly didn't work for the Morettis—drew a hidden firearm from his vest, aiming straight at me. ""Senator Callahan sends his regards.""

""Claire, down!"" Gabriel roared.

Gabriel threw his entire body in front of mine, using his broad torso as a human shield just as the bodyguard pulled the trigger. A deafening gunshot rang out, followed by a grunt of pain as Gabriel absorbed the impact.
