Chapter 2 - Playing The Lioness

The penthouse was vast, cold, and predominantly furnished in shades of slate and obsidian, a fortress designed by a man accustomed to betrayal. By late afternoon, the city outside was cloaked in dreary autumn rain, but inside Gabriel's private office, a different storm was brewing. Mateo had brought four cardboard banker's boxes stuffed with financial disclosures, court filings, and handwritten notes from Luke's secret meetings.
""If we're going to strike back, we have to look like a united front,"" I announced, dropping an armful of corporate ledgers onto Gabriel’s low glass coffee table.
Gabriel looked up from his monitor, an amused tilt touching the corner of his scarred lips. ""A united front? Claire, twenty-four hours ago you looked ready to plunge a butter knife through my carotid artery.""
""That was before I knew you were the only person in this godforsaken city who treated me like a human being,"" I replied coolly, sitting down across from him. ""Luke expects me to crawl into a corner, cry over my broken heart, and hide in the suburbs while he parades Isabella Callahan through charity galas. He thinks you're a crippled recluse who won't fight back. He’s already leaking stories to the society pages claiming I was an unstable fiancé who threw a fit and settled for the older brother.""
Gabriel’s jaw tightened. ""Let them talk. Words don't sink ships.""
""No, but public perception influences bank boards, Gabriel,"" I countered, leaning forward. ""My degree isn't in flower arranging. I spent four years analyzing corporate takeovers and forensic accounting before my father dragged me into his sinking retail business. Look at this.""
I pulled out three highlighted sheets from Luke’s file. ""Luke didn't just borrow money to pay my brother's hospital bills. He funneled that money through Callahan Logistics—a dummy shell company registered in Delaware. Senator Callahan is using Luke to launder dirty municipal contracts through your family's shipping lines. If federal investigators look into this, Luke won't just be disgraced. He’ll take the entire Moretti empire down with him, and you'll be the one holding the smoking gun because your name is still listed as Chief Executive Officer.""
Gabriel stared at the papers, his sharp hazel eyes scanning the numbers with predatory focus. The casual cynicism vanished from his demeanor, replaced by the lethal intelligence that had earned him control of Chicago's underworld at twenty-five.
""He wouldn't be this reckless on his own,"" Gabriel murmured. ""Someone is coaching him.""
""Isabella,"" I said without missing a beat. ""She isn't just a political trophy. She's the mastermind behind Callahan's commercial expansions. She needed an ambitious, gullible idiot with a historic family name to sign the paperwork so her father's hands stayed clean. Luke took the bait because he was tired of living in your shadow.""
Gabriel leaned back against his leather executive chair, regarding me with genuine admiration. For months, Luke had paraded me around town like an ornament, speaking over me at dinners and dismissing my opinions as charming domestic chatter. But Gabriel was looking at me like a commander sizing up an indispensable ally.
""Tomorrow evening is the annual Autumn Symphony Benefit at the Drake Hotel,"" Gabriel said slowly, tapping his finger against the armrest. ""Every power broker in Illinois will be there. Luke and Isabella are scheduled to make their official public debut as a couple.""
""Good,"" I smiled, feeling a dangerous thrill race through my veins. ""Then that's where Claire and Gabriel Moretti make theirs.""
""My public appearances are rare, Claire. People stare. They whisper about the cane, about the trial three years ago, about the blood on my hands.""
May you like
""Let them stare,"" I told him, holding his gaze without flinching. ""I'll be wearing red, Gabriel. And by the time the night is over, nobody will even remember Luke was in the room.""
A slow, wolfish grin spread across his rugged face. ""Mateo,"" he called out toward the antechamber. ""Call the private salon at Saks. Tell them Mrs. Moretti requires an emergency fitting. And call my tailor. It seems I have a party to attend.""
