Chapter 3 - The Drake Ball Ambush

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, smelling of French champagne, white lilies, and cutthroat ambition. More than four hundred guests from Chicago's high society, political dynasties, and old-money dynasties sipped vintage wine while classical strings drifted from the mezzanine.

At the center of the largest VIP alcove stood Luke, immaculate in a bespoke tuxedo, with Isabella Callahan draped on his arm. Isabella was striking—tall, ice-blonde, dressed in a sleek emerald gown, and wearing diamond earrings that cost more than a family home.

""Did you hear?"" Isabella purred to a huddle of city councilors and journalists. ""Poor Luke had to endure quite an emotional scene yesterday. A family friend's daughter had developed an unhealthy obsession with him. Fortunately, his elder brother graciously agreed to take her off his hands to spare the family embarrassment.""

Polite, cruel laughter rippled through the circle. Luke swelled with pride, raising his glass. ""We do what we must for family harmony. Some people simply aren't built for this world.""

At that exact moment, the grand double doors at the top of the marble staircase parted.

The ballroom chatter didn't just fade; it stopped completely, like a needle violently pulled from a vinyl record.

Gabriel Moretti stood at the top of the stairs. He wore an impeccably tailored black midnight-blue tuxedo that highlighted his broad shoulders and formidable frame. The ebony cane in his right hand was capped in solid silver, carried not as an apology for an injury, but like a scepter of undisputed authority.

And holding his left arm was me.

I wore a daring, floor-length crimson gown of heavy silk with an open back and a slit that revealed diamond-studded heels. My hair was swept into an intricate updo, and around my neck rested the legendary Moretti heirloom—a breathtaking sapphire necklace that hadn't seen the light of day since Gabriel’s late mother passed away.

We descended the staircase together, deliberate and majestic. Every single camera flash in the room exploded in our direction.

""Is that... Claire Montgomery?"" a society columnist gasped nearby. ""I thought she was devastated!""

""Look at that necklace,"" another whispered. ""The matriarch's stones. Gabriel never gave those to anyone.""

Luke's champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the polished parquet floor. Isabella grabbed his forearm, her painted smile freezing into a mask of pure disbelief.

Gabriel led me straight through the parted crowd, stopping directly in front of the frozen couple. The tension was so thick it could be cut with a diamond blade.

""Luke,"" Gabriel greeted him smoothly, his deep baritone carrying across the breathless silence. ""Isabella. What a charming evening to celebrate new beginnings.""

Isabella quickly regained her composure, though her eyes blazed with fury as she took in the sight of me wearing jewelry worth more than her family's campaign war chest. ""Gabriel. We didn't expect you to leave the compound. Especially not under such... hasty circumstances. Claire, darling, aren't you brave to show your face so soon after yesterday's disaster?""

I took a sip from the flute of champagne Gabriel smoothly handed me, looking Isabella up and down with quiet pity.

""Disaster, Isabella? I consider yesterday the most fortunate escape of my life,"" I said with a radiant smile. ""When a man proves himself willing to pawn off his honor for a temporary campaign endorsement, passing him along to someone who values politics over integrity is merely good philanthropy. Wouldn't you agree, Luke?""

Luke turned bright crimson, his fists clenching at his sides. ""Claire, you don't belong here. You don't know what you're doing.""

""Mrs. Moretti belongs wherever she chooses,"" Gabriel cut in, stepping forward half an inch. The physical presence of the man was overwhelming; Luke instinctively took a step back, bumping into a bistro table. ""And as Chairman of the Moretti Group, I am formally announcing tonight that my wife has been appointed Senior Director of Maritime Operations and Corporate Audit. Starting tomorrow at dawn, Claire will be personally reviewing every single contract signed in this city over the last two years.""

Isabella went dead white. She knew exactly what files were buried in those shipping manifests.

""Enjoy your evening,"" I whispered softly to Luke as Gabriel offered me his arm again. ""You traded up for a title, Luke. But you gave away the kingdom.""
