Chapter 10 - The Vow We Chose

Six months later.
The private courtyard garden of the Moretti coastal villa in Santa Barbara was blanketed in blooming white jasmine and fragrant citrus blossoms. The Pacific Ocean stretched endlessly beyond the cliffside terrace, glittering like crushed sapphires beneath a warm, cloudless spring sky.
There were no crowds of two hundred whispering strangers. There were no flashing press cameras, no corrupt politicians, and no deceptive contracts hidden in gilded envelopes.
There was only a small stone gazebo, an elderly local officiant, Mateo standing as the sole witness in a crisp linen suit, and Gabriel.
Gabriel stood tall before the altar, completely abandoning his cane on the marble bench beside him. His physical therapy had been brutal, but his determination to stand unassisted on this day had driven him through months of grueling rehabilitation. Dressed in an ivory linen suit with an open collar, the harsh lines of his face had softened beneath the California sun. He looked radiant, powerful, and deeply at peace.
The soft strumming of an acoustic guitar drifted across the terrace as I walked down the stone path alone.
I didn't wear red this time. I wore a simple, breathtaking gown of white silk that fluttered in the ocean breeze, holding a small bouquet of wildflowers gathered from the hillside. There was no veil hiding my face. I looked directly into Gabriel's eyes with every step I took, my heart full and steady.
When I reached him, he took both of my hands into his. His grip was warm, solid, and filled with a devotion that took my breath away.
""You look stunning, Mrs. Moretti,"" he whispered, his hazel eyes shining with unshed tears.
""You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Moretti,"" I smiled, leaning up slightly to brush my thumb against the small scar along his cheekbone.
The officiant cleared his throat, offering a warm smile. ""We are gathered here today to witness not the binding of a legal transaction, but the sacred union of two souls who chose one another through the fiercest storms.""
Gabriel looked down at me, ignoring the prepared index cards the officiant had provided.
""Claire,"" he spoke, his voice deep, resonant, and entirely steady. ""When you first walked down an aisle to me, I was a stranger who believed he was destined for nothing but violence, solitude, and duty. I offered you a key and a door to walk away, because I never believed I deserved someone as brilliant, brave, and pure as you. But you didn't run. You stood beside me, fought for me, and taught me that a home isn't built of stone and contracts—it’s built of trust. I give you my life, my loyalty, and my unconditional love, for as long as I draw breath.""
Tears spilled over my lashes, radiant and joyful, as I squeezed his hands.
""Gabriel,"" I said, my voice clear against the rhythmic crash of the waves below. ""I walked down that first aisle thinking I had lost everything—my future, my family, and my dignity. But the cruelest trick fate ever played on me turned out to be the greatest blessing of my life. Luke thought he was punishing you by giving you me, and he thought he was humiliating me by giving me away. Instead, he gave me the only man who ever saw me as an equal, the only protector who ever bled for my safety, and the only partner I will ever want. Today, I don't wear a veil, and nobody is paying my debts. Today, Gabriel, I choose you with my whole heart.""
""By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,"" the officiant declared. ""You may kiss your bride.""
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly off the stone floor as his mouth met mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed every promise we had ever made. Mateo applauded warmly from the side, a rare grin splitting his weathered face.
When Gabriel finally set me down, he kept his arms securely wrapped around my waist, resting his forehead against mine as the ocean breeze wrapped around us.
May you like
""No more contracts?"" I teased softly, looking up into his smiling eyes.
""No more contracts,"" Gabriel murmured, kissing the tip of my nose. ""Just you and me, Claire. Forever."""
