Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Edward looked up at Gabriella, his face pale and drained. ""Am I going to jail, Gabriella?""

Gabriella pulled a dining room chair into the hallway, sat down across from him, and placed her briefcase flat on her lap. She looked at him not just as a lawyer, but as someone who had known him since he was seven years old, scraping his knees on the concrete driveway out back.

""That depends entirely on what you do in the next forty-eight hours, Edward,"" Gabriella said directly. ""David Miller did not file a police report regarding the sixty-eight thousand dollars, but the firm's board of directors requires full restitution within sixty days to avoid referring the case to the Illinois State Licensing Board and the State's Attorney.""

Edward buried his face in his hands, his breath coming in ragged gasps. ""I don't have sixty-eight thousand dollars. I don't even have sixty-eight hundred. Linda spent it all on showroom rent, inventory that never sold, and marketing consultants who vanished the moment the checks cleared. Every personal credit card is at its limit. Our car leases are three months past due. We were completely broke. That’s why she pushed the house. She said if we got title to this house, we could pull out a five-hundred-thousand-dollar home equity loan, pay off David, and start over.""

""By stealing from your mother,"" Gabriella said, letting the words hang in the air like a cold blade. ""By throwing a seventy-year-old widow who sheltered you onto the street.""

Edward began to weep again, his shoulders heaving with genuine, agonizing shame. ""I was terrified, Gabriella! I was drowning! Linda told me if I went to prison, she’d take the kids to Arizona and I would never see them again. She screamed at me every day for six months. She told me I was a failure, that my father would have been disgusted by me, that I had destroyed our family because I couldn't make partner. I just wanted the screaming to stop.""

I walked over and stood beside Gabriella, looking down at my son. The anger that had burned inside me all afternoon had burned down into something colder, harder, and far more useful: resolve.

""Your father would never have been disgusted by your failure, Edward,"" I said, my voice cutting through his tears. ""Anthony failed his first two teaching certifications before he found his stride. We lived on canned soup and macaroni for two years when you were a baby. Your father would have held your hand, helped you carry the boxes, and told you to hold your head high while you worked a night shift at a warehouse to pay back every penny.""

Edward looked up at me, his eyes pleading. ""Mom...""

""What Anthony would have been disgusted by,"" I continued, unyielding, ""is your cowardice. He would have been sickened to watch you sit at that dining table and say nothing while another human being treated your mother like garbage in her own home. You let that woman poison your mind because you didn't have the courage to tell her no.""

Edward lowered his head, unable to meet my eyes. ""I know, Mom. God help me, I know. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.""

""An apology without restitution is just manipulation, Edward,"" Gabriella stated coldly. ""Here are the terms Hope and I have established. Listen carefully.""

Gabriella unfolded a detailed memorandum.

""First: Tomorrow morning at eight o’clock, you will report to David Miller’s office. You will sign a formal confession of judgment and a promissory note. You will surrender your luxury watch, your golf club memberships, and every personal luxury item you purchased over the past three years to David's liquidation trustee.""

Edward nodded numbly. ""Yes. Whatever David wants.""

""Second: You will move into the basement garden suite behind this house—the one your father built as a workshop,"" Gabriella continued. ""You will not sleep in the main house until further notice. You will pay two hundred dollars a week in room and board, which Hope will place directly into a college fund for Sarah and Dylan.""

Edward blinked in surprise. ""I can stay? You're not kicking me out with Linda?""

I looked at him, feeling the heavy, ancient ache of motherhood in my chest. ""You are my son, Edward. You made choices that disgust me, but I will not abandon you to the gutter if you are willing to crawl your way back to being a man. But you will earn your place here. Inch by inch. Dish by dish.""

May you like

""And third,"" Gabriella added, her pen poised. ""Tomorrow at noon, you will file for legal separation and full legal custody of Sarah and Dylan, with Hope appointed as co-guardian. Linda Mendoza will not receive a single penny of maintenance from any asset connected to the Mendoza trust. Do you agree?""

Edward didn't hesitate. He took the pen and wrote his name on the line.
