Chapter 4 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The grandfather clock in the corner chimed seven times. Each strike sounded like a gavel falling in an empty courtroom.

Edward stayed on his knees, his forehead pressed against the polished floorboards of his childhood home. He was weeping openly now, the ugly, ragged sobs of a man who realized every escape route had been paved over. Linda stood above him, looking down at her husband with undisguised disgust before glaring back at me.

""You're disgusting,"" Linda hissed at Edward, nudging his shoulder with the toe of her designer heel. ""Get up off the floor! Stand up, you pathetic coward! Begging a woman who’s about to put you in a cage? Do you have any spine left at all?""

Officer Vance stepped between Linda and Edward, resting his hand lightly on his tactical belt. ""Ma'am, step back. Do not make contact with him again.""

Gabriella turned to me, offering a quiet, questioning look. We had planned this carefully during the three hours before she arrived. Every step had been calculated to protect the family legacy Anthony had spent his life building, while cutting out the rot before it destroyed the innocent ones—Sarah and Dylan.

""Hope,"" Gabriella said, ""the emergency order provides two options. Option A is the immediate execution of the criminal complaint for attempted grand larceny and elder financial abuse. The officers will take Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza into custody tonight. Child Protective Services has already been alerted and is on standby at the 19th District precinct to take temporary custody of the minors.""

At the mention of Child Protective Services, Linda’s arrogance collapsed instantly. Her face went chalk white. ""CPS? No! You can't take my children! They have school tomorrow! They have ballet! You can't touch them!""

Sarah stepped out of the dining room completely, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. She didn't look at her mother. She walked straight past Linda, straight past Edward, and threw her arms around my waist, burying her face into my wool cardigan.

""Grandma,"" Sarah sobbed, her thin shoulders shaking violently. ""Please don't let them take us away. Mom told us in the car that we were going to sell this house and move to Florida, and that we were never going to see you again. She said you were too mean and selfish to live with us.""

I placed my hand gently on my granddaughter's head, smoothing her dark hair. Her words burned like lye, but they gave me the absolute clarity I needed. There was no room left for sentimentality. Linda had not just wanted my home; she had wanted to erase me from my grandchildren’s lives after stripping me of everything Anthony had left behind.

""Option B, Gabriella?"" I asked, keeping my hand firm on Sarah's shoulder.

Gabriella looked down at the second set of papers in her folder.

""Option B,"" Gabriella stated, ""is a conditional settlement agreement and an immediate voluntary vacate order. Linda Mendoza leaves this property tonight. Within one hour. She takes only her personal clothing and immediate necessities. The vehicles leased under Edward's company will be surrendered to the custody of the receiver tomorrow morning to satisfy the outstanding civil claims.""

Linda gashed her fingernails into her palms. ""Where am I supposed to go? My parents are in Arizona! I have no one in this city!""

""You have a credit card that still has forty dollars of available credit, and there is an extended-stay motel three miles west on Cicero Avenue,"" Gabriella said without a drop of sympathy. ""And furthermore, as part of Option B, Mrs. Linda Mendoza will execute an immediate voluntary waiver of custodial rights pending a psychological and financial fitness evaluation. Sarah and Dylan remain here, under the legal kinship guardianship of their grandmother, Hope Mendoza.""

""Never!"" Linda screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill screech that hurt the ears. ""You will not steal my children! Edward, tell her! She can't take our kids!""

Edward slowly lifted his head from the floor. His face was blotchy, his eyes swollen and bloodshot. For the first time in ten years, he looked directly at the woman he had married.

""Linda,"" Edward croaked, his voice raw. ""Sign the papers.""

""What?"" Linda gasped, staring at him as if he had grown a second head. ""Are you out of your mind?""

""Sign the papers!"" Edward shouted, scrambling to his feet, his fists clutched at his sides. ""You pushed this! You told me my mother was weak! You told me she would fold if we pushed her hard enough! You wanted the Lincoln Park house, you wanted the boutique, you wanted the luxury trips to Aspen! I stole from my father’s best friend because you threatened to take the kids to Scottsdale if I couldn't keep up with your sister's lifestyle! Look at what we’ve done!""

May you like

""You're blaming me?"" Linda sneered, stepping back. ""You weak, pathetic excuse for a man! You couldn't even stand up to your own mother!""

""Enough,"" Officer Vance commanded, his voice cutting through the shouting like a gunshot. ""The clock is ticking. It is seven-fifteen. At eight-fifteen, if the signatures are not on the voluntary surrender and vacate forms, I execute the criminal warrants. Make your choice.""
