Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

Travis fell back against the wall, clutching his chest as if he were having a physical seizure. ""Mom... ninety million? You... you have ninety million dollars?""

""I built an international logistics network from a damp basement office while you were in elementary school, Travis,"" I said, my voice steady, resonant, and devoid of the meek grandmotherly tone they had grown accustomed to. ""Your father and I worked eighty-hour weeks for three decades so that you would never have to worry about hunger, poverty, or debt. But Arthur always knew your weakness. He knew you were easily swayed by vanity, ego, and greed.""

""I... I didn't know!"" Travis stammered, tears suddenly streaming down his cheeks. ""Mom, if I had known, I would have treated you differently! I would have protected you! I would have made sure Melanie respected you!""

""And that, Travis, is the most pathetic thing you have ever said,"" I replied, feeling the last lingering vestige of motherly guilt evaporate into thin air. ""You would have treated me with respect only because of my money? You would have defended me from your wife’s venom only if you knew I held millions in the bank?""

Melanie suddenly dropped to her knees right on the entryway rug. She crawled forward, completely abandoning every shred of dignity, reaching out toward the hem of my trousers.

""Ruth! Mama Ruth!"" Melanie wept hysterically, her voice screeching in desperation. ""Please! I was stupid! I was uneducated! I grew up poor and I was terrified of being broke! I swear to God, I love you! I will cook for you every day! I will scrub these floors on my hands and knees! Please, don't cut Travis out! He's your only child! We are your family!""

""Do not touch me, Melanie,"" I said softly, stepping back so her manicured hands only grabbed empty air.

Julian Vance signaled to one of the junior attorneys, who immediately opened a leather portfolio and extracted a thick, notarized document.

""For the past twenty-four months,"" Julian announced, reading directly from the legal dossier, ""Mrs. Sterling has resided in this home under a structured family character evaluation. Under the terms of the original Arthur Sterling Testamentary Trust, sixty percent of the family estate was scheduled to transfer unconditionally to Travis Sterling upon Mrs. Sterling reaching seventy-one years of age—provided that Travis demonstrated ethical conduct, family loyalty, and fiscal responsibility.""

Travis’s breath caught in his throat. ""Sixty... sixty percent? That's... over fifty million dollars...""

""Fifty million dollars that was scheduled to enter your private trust account next March,"" Julian confirmed coldly. ""However, the trust instrument contained a specific, binding codicil known as the Dignity and Care Clause. If Travis Sterling, or any legal spouse representing his household, subjected Ruth Sterling to elder abuse, financial coercion, emotional harassment, or threats of involuntary institutionalization, the entire inheritance would be automatically, irreversibly revoked.""

Melanie let out an agonized, animalistic shriek. She turned on Travis, beating her fists against his chest. ""You fool! You idiot! We could have had fifty million dollars! Why did you let me yell at her?! Why didn't you stop me?!""

May you like

""Why didn't I stop you?!"" Travis roared back, shoving her away in utter despair. ""You're the one who called her garbage! You're the one who wanted her Social Security check! You ruined my life! You destroyed everything!""

They collapsed into a pathetic heap of screaming, sobbing accusations on the floor of the foyer they had claimed as their own.
