Chapter 4 - The Law Arrives

Two uniformed officers from the Seattle Police Department stood on the front porch, shivering slightly in the morning drizzle. The senior officer, a burly man with graying temples named Officer Miller, held a clipboard, while his younger partner stood near the squad car.

""Good morning,"" Officer Miller said as I pulled the heavy door open. ""We received a domestic welfare call regarding an intentional utility shutoff and a dispute between residents.""

""Officer, thank God you're here!"" Melanie shoved past me, dramatically pulling her parka tight around her shoulders. ""Look at this house! It's freezing! My mother-in-law has suffered a mental decline and has become hostile. She shut off the central heating, canceled the internet, and locked us out of the kitchen appliances. She’s threatening to throw us onto the street in the dead of winter!""

Officer Miller looked past Melanie, his eyes landing on me. Then, he looked down at the property paperwork attached to his digital dispatch terminal.

""Ma'am, are you Ruth Sterling?"" he asked me respectfully.

""I am,"" I replied calmly. ""And this is my son, Travis Sterling, and his wife, Melanie.""

""Officer, she's unhinged!"" Melanie continued her theatrics, feigning tears. ""She needs an immediate psychiatric evaluation. She's seventy years old and completely unable to manage this property. As family caregivers, Travis and I are trying to ensure her safety, but she’s endangering all of us!""

Officer Miller exchanged a glance with his partner, then looked back at Melanie with an expression of stoic fatigue. ""Ma'am, step back from the doorway, please.""

He turned to his partner. ""Check the ownership registry.""

The younger officer tapped his tablet. ""Property ID matches. Single owner on deed: Ruth Eleanor Sterling. No secondary owners, no registered lease agreements, no active adult guardianship filings. In fact, Dispatch flagged this address five minutes ago. There’s an active notice of civil trespass and formal eviction filing submitted by Carter & Sterling Legal Group at 6:00 AM.""

Melanie froze. ""What?""

Officer Miller turned back to Melanie and Travis. ""Officers do not enforce utility disputes in owner-occupied private residences where occupants have no legal lease. Furthermore, Mrs. Sterling’s legal team has already provided our precinct with documentation proving you two are unauthorized occupants who have been issued a formal demand to vacate. You have seventy-two hours to peacefully gather your belongings.""

""Wait a minute!"" Travis panicked, stepping forward. ""Officer, I'm her biological son! You can't treat me like a trespasser in my childhood home!""

""Sir,"" Officer Miller said firmly, resting his hand casually on his duty belt, ""the law does not recognize adult offspring as automatic property owners. If the sole owner demands that you leave, and her legal team has followed statutory procedure, you must vacate. If you cause a domestic disturbance or attempt to force entry into private quarters, you will be arrested for domestic criminal trespass.""

Melanie’s jaw dropped. The smug arrogance that had defined her face for two years vanished instantly, replaced by a raw, naked panic. She looked at the officers, then at Travis, and finally at me.

""You... you set this up,"" she hissed at me under her breath. ""You planned this.""

""I spent forty years running global logistics, Melanie,"" I replied smoothly. ""In my industry, we anticipate bottlenecks and eliminate liabilities before they disrupt the supply chain. You have sixty-nine hours remaining. I suggest you spend them packing boxes rather than calling the police.""

Officer Miller tipped his cap to me. ""Stay warm, Mrs. Sterling. We'll have a patrol car monitor the perimeter tonight.""

As the squad car backed down the driveway, the front door closed with a resounding thud. Travis looked at his wife, whose face was contorted with humiliation and rage.

""Pack your bags, Melanie,"" Travis whispered, defeated. ""We have nowhere to go.""

""Shut up!"" Melanie screamed at him, kicking a designer suitcase across the foyer floor. ""You useless coward! You told me she was a penniless old woman! You let me believe we were going to inherit everything!""

I watched them from the top of the stairs, feeling not joy, but the cold satisfaction of justice long overdue.
