Chapter 5 - The Desperate Move

By Thursday afternoon, the cold reality of their financial destitution had fully set in. Without access to my high-limit credit cards, Travis and Melanie were trapped. Travis’s car lease payment had bounced, and Melanie’s boutique firm had three vendors demanding immediate payment for marketing materials she had ordered under the assumption that I would quietly cover the invoices at the end of the month.
I sat in my sunlit bedroom, reviewing quarterly financial reports for the Sterling Charitable Foundation. Through the floorboards, I could hear muffled shouting, weeping, and the frantic tearing of packing tape.
Around 4:00 PM, a knock sounded on my door. It wasn't Travis’s timid tap or Melanie’s aggressive bang. It was slow, hesitant, almost groveling.
I opened the door.
Melanie stood there, holding a freshly baked plate of chocolate chip cookies. Her designer makeup was meticulously redone, her hair smoothed back into an elegant bun. She wore a modest, humble beige sweater—a stark contrast to the designer labels she flaunted daily.
""Ruth,"" she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness, tears welling up in her eyes on command. ""Can we please talk? Just woman to woman?""
I leaned against the doorframe, crossing my arms. ""You have three minutes, Melanie.""
She stepped forward, attempting to push the plate into my hands, but I didn't reach out to take it. She awkwardly held it between us.
""I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart,"" Melanie sobbed softly, letting a single tear roll down her cheek. ""I have been under so much stress with my small business. Travis hasn't been completely honest with me about our finances, and I took all my anxiety and frustration out on you. It was unforgivable. When I called you those horrible names... I wasn't in my right mind.""
""Is that so?"" I asked coolly.
""Yes! Truly!"" She nodded eagerly. ""You are Travis's beloved mother. You built this beautiful family. We don't want you to be alone in this big house! Who will take care of the cooking and the gardening? Who will keep you company when the winter storms come? We want to stay and take care of you, Ruth. We can set up a joint bank account where Travis manages the monthly bills so you never have to worry about utility paperwork again. We just want peace.""
A joint bank account. Even in the depths of her defeat, the predator was still sniffing for blood.
""You really think I'm a fool, don't you?"" I asked quietly.
Melanie blinked, her rehearsed smile freezing. ""What? No, Ruth, I—""
""You didn't come up here because you're remorseful, Melanie. You came up here because you called your bank this morning and discovered that the $15,000 credit line under your corporate name was backed by my personal guarantee—a guarantee that my legal team officially revoked at noon today.""
Melanie gasped, taking a step backward. The plate of cookies rattled in her hands.
""You also received a call from your landlord at the boutique office suite informing you that your security deposit check bounced,"" I continued relentlessly. ""You are bankrupt. Not because of bad luck, but because you spent two years living a lavish, fraudulent life funded entirely by an elderly woman you secretly despised.""
""Ruth, please—""
""You stood in my kitchen and told me I was dead weight. You said you would have me institutionalized so you could seize my home. Did you really believe that an apology and a plate of store-bought cookies would erase the fact that you showed me your true soul?""
Melanie’s facade cracked completely. The artificial tears dried instantly, replaced by a venomous sneer. ""You bitter old monster! You think you're untouchable?! Travis is your only child! When you die, every single cent you have goes to him anyway! You can humiliate us now, but in the end, we win! You're going to die alone in this empty tomb, and we will inherit every brick!""

I smiled, a cold, genuine smile that sent a shiver straight down her spine.
""That, Melanie, brings us to tomorrow’s agenda. Now get out of my sight.""
