Chapter 8 - The Price Of Loyalty

Two months later, the cold New York winter had settled over the city, blanketing Central Park in a serene, brilliant white.
Julian Vance accepted a plea deal to avoid life imprisonment: twenty-five years at Sing Sing Correctional Facility for attempted murder and federal financial fraud. His plea agreement required him to testify against all of his co-conspirators, leaving Robert Mercer with zero leverage. Facing overwhelming evidence, my father pleaded guilty to four counts of bank fraud and was sentenced to four years at a federal minimum-security facility in upstate New York.
I visited the facility once, the day before he was transferred.
We sat across from each other in the stark, fluorescent-lit visitation room, separated by a scratched acrylic partition. Robert looked completely broken, his expensive suits replaced by coarse khaki prison scrubs.
""Claire,"" he croaked, picking up the receiver. ""You came.""
I lifted my phone. ""I came to close the book, Robert.""
He looked down at his rough hands. ""Every night when I close my eyes, I hear the nurse's voice on that phone. I don't know why I said it, Claire. I was terrified. Julian was standing right behind me, whispering that if we left, the investors at the party would know something was wrong. I chose my reputation over my daughter's life. I know there's no forgiveness for that.""
""You're right,"" I said quietly. ""There isn't.""
He flinched. ""What happens to your mother?""
""I bought a modest two-bedroom bungalow in Ohio near her sister,"" I replied evenly. ""I paid the lease for two years. She has a modest monthly stipend managed by an independent fiduciary. She won't starve, but she won't be attending charity galas either. As for Vanessa, she’s working as an administrative assistant at a dentist’s office in Queens and living in a one-bedroom apartment. She's finally learning how much a gallon of milk costs.""
Tears dripped onto the metal table from Robert's chin. ""And you?""
""I resigned from Meridian Global yesterday,"" I said, a genuine, peaceful smile touching my lips for the first time in years. ""Grandfather left a substantial portion of his estate dedicated to maritime environmental preservation and forensic investigations into predatory real estate cartels. Victor and I are launching the Mercer Foundation next week.""
""Your grandfather would be proud of you,"" Robert whispered.
May you like
""I know,"" I answered. ""Because unlike you, he knew what honor looked like.""
I hung up the receiver, stood up, and walked out into the crisp, clean winter air without looking back.
