Chapter 5 - The Emergency Summit

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Grand Plaza Hotel was suffocating with panic.

Julian Vance stood at the head of the long mahogany table, his tie loosened, dark circles ringing his eyes like charcoal. My father sat to his right, repeatedly wiping sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. Vanessa sat near the window, chewing her manicured fingernails down to the quick, surrounded by four of Julian’s most aggressive corporate defense attorneys.

""The freeze is an administrative error!"" Julian was shouting to the room of eight private lenders and banking representatives. ""Someone lodged a fraudulent compliance flag with Meridian Global! My team is resolving it today. We just need a seventy-two-hour waiver on the margin call for the Harbor Heights development, or the entire secondary portfolio collapses!""

""A seventy-two-hour waiver won't cure a twenty-million-dollar structural shortfall, Julian,"" a cold voice rang out.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Every head in the room snapped around.

I walked into the room slowly, deliberately, the click of my sensible heels echoing against the marble floor. I wore a tailored midnight-blue suit over my bandages, my posture perfectly erect despite the throbbing pain in my side. Behind me walked Victor Sterling and four senior partners from Morrison & Sterling, the most feared corporate litigation firm in Manhattan.

""Claire?!"" Vanessa shrieked, jumping out of her chair. ""What the hell are you doing here? Julian, get security! She can't be in this room!""

""Security works for the building management, Vanessa,"" I said smoothly, stepping to the center of the table. ""And as of eight o'clock this morning, the building management reports directly to the Arthur Mercer Trust.""

Robert rose from his chair, his voice shaking with outrage. ""Claire! You have disgraced this family enough! You maliciously froze Julian's accounts out of petty jealousy because we didn't visit you in the hospital! How dare you show up here to embarrass us?""

""Petty jealousy?"" I laughed, a sharp, humorless sound that cut through the room like a razor.

I signaled to Victor’s lead counsel, who stepped forward and slammed a stack of legal notices onto the table in front of every creditor.

""My name is Claire Mercer,"" I announced to the room, projecting my voice with calm, absolute authority. ""I am the senior compliance investigator who flagged Vance Development for systematic wire fraud, money laundering, and illegal asset transfers. And more importantly, as the sole trustee of the Mercer Maritime Estate, I hold first-position liens on every single commercial property Julian Vance has developed in the state of New York.""

Julian’s face went from pale to ghostly green. ""That's impossible... Arthur Mercer was a broke old sailor! He died with nothing!""

""He died with two hundred million dollars in secured assets, Julian,"" I replied, staring directly into his terrified eyes. ""Assets that he protected from parasitic grifters like you. And as the majority lienholder, I am officially denying your request for a credit extension.""

The room erupted into chaos. Creditors began shouting, collecting their papers, and demanding immediate foreclosure proceedings.

""Claire, stop!"" Vanessa screamed, running around the table toward me, her eyes wild. ""You're destroying my life! Julian will go bankrupt! We will lose our home! Look at me—I'm your sister!""

I looked at her, completely unmoved. ""When I was lying in a mangled car, bleeding to death on Interstate 87, you didn't think of me as your sister. You thought of me as an inconvenience to your holiday dinner.""
