Chapter 2 - The Stranger In The Shadows

The screams outside eventually ceased, replaced by the hushed, frantic murmurs of people realizing their fortress of stolen cards was tumbling down. Through the peephole, I watched Julian yank my father by the lapel of his coat, dragging him toward the elevator while Vanessa sobbed into her hands. They knew my front door was an impenetrable wall.

I leaned back against the wall, sliding slowly to the floor as an intense wave of nausea washed over me. The surgical incision along my abdomen pulled painfully against the compression wrap. I stared at the flash drive resting on my coffee table.

Plugging an unidentified drive into a private terminal was against every rule I had learned during six years as a forensic investigator at Meridian Global. But the man in the black jacket had known my name, my workplace, my hospital room, and my family's deepest vulnerabilities.

I hauled myself onto the sofa, opened my air-gapped laptop, and inserted the drive.

A single partitioned folder appeared, labeled simply: HARBOR LIGHTS.

Inside were hundreds of scanned bank drafts, wire transfers, and notarized loan applications dating back seven years. My heart pounded against my bruised ribs as I scrolled through the files. Julian hadn't just built luxury condominiums across New York; he had run a massive, intricate Ponzi-style laundering scheme, borrowing against unbuilt properties and funneling dirty money from foreign shell entities through local residential developments.

And right there, on dozens of fake guarantor agreements, was my father’s signature. Robert Mercer had traded his moral compass for a seat on Julian’s board, two luxury sedans, and the illusion of elite wealth. They had staked the entire family name on Julian’s fraudulent empire, laughing at me for working eighty-hour weeks analyzing compliance data while they lived off borrowed, illicit fortunes.

Then I opened the subfolder labeled I-87 ACCIDENT.

My blood turned to ice.

There were three high-resolution photographs taken by a highway traffic camera twenty minutes before my car rolled on the black ice. Directly behind my silver sedan was a dark slate-gray pickup truck. In the second photo, the truck’s front bumper was inches from my rear fender, aggressively tailgating me in a blinding snow flurry. In the third photo, taken just after the crash barrier snapped, the truck was accelerating away.

Attached to the photos was a police registration lookup. The truck was registered to a shell company called Apex Logistics LLC—a wholly owned subsidiary of Vance Development Corp.

My crash wasn't an accident caused solely by black ice.

Someone had run me off the road.

Julian had known I was digging into his shell companies long before Thanksgiving. When my mother had casually mentioned over the phone that I was bringing my laptop home to finish some firm audits over the holiday weekend, Julian must have panicked.

A soft chime startled me. A message window popped up on my laptop screen, bypassing my firewall entirely.

Unknown User: Do not confront them yet. They are desperate, and desperate men are dangerous. Meet me at the old maritime warehouse on Pier 42 at midnight. Bring the brass key. It's time to finish what they started.

I stared at the blinking cursor, my hands trembling. ""Who are you?"" I typed back.

May you like

The reply was instantaneous.

Unknown User: The person who made sure the surgeons didn't let you die. A friend of your grandfather.
