Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath The City

The reality hit me with the force of an oncoming freight train. It was one thing to know my family was shallow and neglectful; it was something entirely monstrous to realize Julian had attempted to murder me to protect his stolen empire, while my parents sat by eating stuffing and sipping Chardonnay.

""Julian tried to kill me,"" I whispered, the words tasting like copper in my mouth.

""Yes,"" Victor confirmed grimly. ""And when the hospital called to report you had survived the crash, Julian sat in your parents' living room, calculating how long he had before you spoke to investigators. That's why your father told the nurse they wouldn't come. They wanted you to bleed out quietly on that table.""

Tears pricked my eyes, but they weren't tears of grief. They were the boiling tears of absolute, incandescent rage. Every memory of being sidelined, mocked, and treated like an unwanted burden while Vanessa was showered with praise burned away, leaving behind pure, cold steel.

""The brass key,"" I said, pulling it from my pocket. ""What does it unlock?""

Victor gestured toward the rusted iron doors of the warehouse behind him. ""Follow me.""

We stepped inside the cavernous structure. It was completely empty except for a modern, high-security glass-walled office constructed in the center of the concrete floor. Inside sat bank-grade servers, twin monitors glowing in the dark, and a massive floor safe embedded directly into the reinforced foundation.

""Your grandfather knew the financial world would eventually devour itself with corruption,"" Victor said as we walked into the office. ""He bought the majority debt notes of every major property Julian Vance ever developed. Julian didn't build an empire; he built a house of cards financed by mezzanine loans that were quietly bought up by Arthur’s trust over the past five years.""

Victor pointed to the keyhole on the floor safe. ""Turn it.""

I knelt down, wincing as my ribs flared, and inserted the brass key into the safe. It turned with a heavy, satisfying mechanical clunk. I pulled open the door.

Inside lay three thick leather binders stamped with official seals from the New York State Attorney General’s office, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

""Everything Julian Vance and your father own doesn't belong to them,"" Victor explained softly. ""The moment Julian defaulted on his commercial credit line this morning, the debt reverted to Arthur’s trust. You are the sole trustee, Claire. You don't just have the evidence to send Julian and Robert to federal prison for bank fraud and attempted murder. You legally own the mortgages on Julian’s penthouse, his development projects, and your parents' lavish suburban estate.""

I looked up at Victor, my hands steadying. ""They think they can intimidate me into dropping the audit.""

""Then let them try,"" Victor said with a quiet, dangerous smile. ""Tomorrow morning, Julian has called an emergency board meeting with his private creditors at the Grand Plaza Hotel to beg for a thirty-day extension. He believes he can forge Robert's signature on a new collateral bridge to keep the feds at bay.""

""And who holds the controlling vote at that meeting?"" I asked.

Victor handed me an embossed black leather folder bearing the seal of the Arthur Mercer Estate. ""You do, Claire. You are the creditor.""
