Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Three weeks later, the snow had melted from the Denver foothills, leaving the spring grass a vibrant, emerald green under the bright high-altitude sun.

I stood on the front steps of the Denver Federal Courthouse wearing my pristine Army dress blues. The gold braided cord draped across my left shoulder, the three rows of distinguished campaign ribbons shone on my chest, and the silver eagles of a full Colonel gleamed boldly upon my shoulders. Alongside me stood federal prosecutors and two officers from the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

A swarm of news reporters and cameras surrounded the plaza steps, microphones thrust forward. The Vance real estate scandal had become the lead headline across national news outlets, exposing how white-collar greed had threatened domestic defense installations.

""Colonel Vance! Colonel Vance!"" a reporter from the Denver Post shouted over the din. ""Is it true your own father attempted to frame you to stall the federal investigation?""

""The evidence presented in federal court speaks for itself,"" I responded smoothly into the microphones, my voice clear and unwavering. ""The men and women of the United States Armed Forces do not serve for personal glory, and they certainly do not serve to shield criminal behavior. Today's guilty plea by Richard Vance closes this operational file. Justice was served according to the law.""

As the press conference concluded, I stepped away from the podium and began walking down the granite steps toward my car.

""Maya!"" a voice cried out from behind the security barriers.

I stopped and looked over.

Tiffany stood behind the barricades. She wore no makeup, no designer sunglasses, and no luxury labels. She had on a plain black sweater and worn jeans. Her eyes were red, puffy from crying, and her face was thin. Without the glitz, the lighting, and the expensive lifestyle her father had illegally funded, she looked entirely human. Vulnerable. And utterly broken.

The federal security officer stepped forward to block her, but I held up a hand. ""It's fine, Sergeant. Give us a minute.""

The officer stepped back. Tiffany walked slowly toward me, her eyes sweeping over my uniform, lingering on the silver eagles, the medals, and the quiet dignity with which I stood.

""He took the deal,"" Tiffany whispered, her voice cracking. ""Dad signed a plea agreement this morning. Seven years at a federal correctional facility. The house is being auctioned next month. Mom is moving into a tiny two-bedroom apartment funded by her sister in Ohio. Everything is gone, Maya. All of it.""

""It was never real to begin with, Tiffany,"" I said gently. ""It was built on stolen money and lies.""

""I know,"" she sobbed, burying her face in her trembling hands. ""I lost everything too. All my brand deals dumped me. The internet made me into a meme. People send me hate mail every day. Brad ghosted me the morning after the raid and tried to blame the whole thing on me to his father's lawyers.""

""Brad was never with you for you,"" I said. ""He was with you because of the image you projected. When the image shattered, the stranger remained.""

Tiffany wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her sweater and looked up at me with profound shame. ""Why didn't you destroy me, Maya? When Uncle Thomas took my phone, you could have leaked the whole video. You could have pressed charges against me for false reporting to the police. The agents told me it was you who instructed them not to charge me as an accessory.""
